Ohio Wesleyan 57, Allegheny 51

Senior post Erica Brizendine (Grove City) scored 3 straight baskets to help Ohio Wesleyan pull away and junior guard Amanda Nanney (Cincinnati/Mother of Mercy) hit 7 free throws during the final minute of play as the Bishops upended Allegheny in quarterfinal action of the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament on Tuesday at Meadville, Pa.

The Bishops had broken a 3-3 tie with a 12-2 run that featured 3-point plays by both Brizendine and senior wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview). Brizendine's 3-point play capped the run and gave Ohio Wesleyan a 15-5 lead with 12:58 left in the first half, and the Bishops went on to take a 28-17 halftime lead.

Freshman post Kelli Lester (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) hit a lay-in early in the second half to give the Bishops their biggest lead at 35-22 with 16:10 left, and Ohio Wesleyan still led by a margin of 37-24 after another Lester lay-in with 14:58 to go.

Allegheny chipped away at the deficit, closing to within 37-31 on a 3-pointer by Kristen Lyzen, a pair of free throws by Courtney Steding and a fast break bucket by Meredith McDonough. and the Gators eventually came within 39-35 on Jackie Tubo's basket with 7:47 remaining.

Lester and sophomore guard Rachel Messaros (Granville/Columbus Bishop Hartley) answered with single free throws for the Bishops, and Messaros added 2 free throws to extend the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 43-36. Brizendine followed with 3 straight buckets, and her fast break lay-in with 3:10 remaining capped a 10-1 spurt that put the Bishops on top by a count of 49-36.

The Bishops still led, 50-39, after a free throw by freshman guard Kathleen Cooper (Columbus/Upper Arlington) with 1:59 left, and with Allegheny forced to foul, Nanney hit 6 straight free throws to keep the lead hovering around double figures.

Allegheny managed to come within 56-49 after Meghan Vasilisin and Katie Kestler hit 3-pointers, but Nanney buried one more free throw to make it 57-49 and Allegheny got within 6 on Valery Medwid's 2 free throws with one tick on the clock.

Brizendine led the Bishops with 17 points, while Heil finished with 13 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Heil also had 5 steals, raising her career total to 252 and breaking the Ohio Wesleyan mark of 248 set by Arden Kragalott from 1977-81. Heil and freshman guard Lindsey Macklin (Bexley) shared the team lead with 2 assists apiece.

Medwid led Allegheny with 14 points. Vasilisn had a team-high 6 rebounds and Raelynn Miles led the Gators with 5 assists.
