Case
Reserve 73, Ohio Wesleyan 68
Nov.
23, 2004
Amber Hammell and Ashley Horton scored 7 points to fuel a 22-3
second-half run that lifted Case Reserve over Ohio Wesleyan in non-conference
play on Tuesday at Branch Rickey Arena.
With Ohio Wesleyan leading, 56-47, with 6:57 to play in regulation time,
the Spartans started their comeback when Hammell went to the line for
2 shots. She hit the first and missed the second, but Horton grabbed the
rebound and put it back to slice the deficit to 56-50. Mary Herendeen
followed with a jumper and a free throw before Hammell drained a jumper
from the left side to bring CWRU within 56-55. Dana Dempsey followed with
a 3-pointer to give the Spartans the lead at 58-56 with 5:06 to go.
Sophomore guard Emily Lloyd (Canton/Massillon Jackson) answered with a
3-pointer to return the lead to Ohio Wesleyan at 59-58, but Hammell scored
on a fast break to put Case back on top, 60-59, with 3:54 to play. Horton
added 2 free throws, then Hammell hit a jumper from the lane for a 64-59
margin with 1:51 to go.
Offensive rebounding helped the Spartan cause. With 1:09 to go, Horton
scored on a follow shot, making the score 66-59, and was fouled on the
play. She missed the free throw but grabbed her own offensive rebound.
Herendeen was fouled with :56.8 to play and missed both free throws, but
grabbed her own offensive rebound and was fouled again. This time, she
sank both shots to increase the Case cushion to 68-59 with :52.7 to go.
Horton capped the 22-3 burst with a free throw that made it 69-59 with
:38.3 remaining.
The Bishops weren't out of it yet, getting a lay-in from senior wing Kelly
Heil (Sylvania/Southview), then drawing to within 5 points on a Heil steal
and lay-in with :30.5 to play, but the Spartans hit enough free throws
to withstand a putback by sophomore post Tifini Ray (Hilliard/Davidson)
and a Heil 3-pointer in the closing seconds.
Case Reserve took advantage of chilly Ohio Wesleyan shooting and an edge
in rebounding to race to an early 13-3 lead. The Bishops closed to within
13-7, but the Spartans answered with a 17-4 run that stretched their lead
to 30-11 with 5:10 left in the first half.
Ohio Wesleyan stormed back in the closing minutes of the half, with Ray
and junior guard Amanda Nanney (Cincinnati/Mother of Mercy) each contributing
a basket and a pair of free throws during a 10-0 run that brought the
Bishops within 30-21. Nanney and Heil then drained 3-pointers during the
final :15 of the half as Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 32-27 at intermission.
After Carmen Rowan scored for CWRU to open the second half, the Bishops
reeled off 11 straight points to take their first lead of the game. Nanney
and Heil each hit another 3-pointer, then Lloyd drove to the basket for
2 points and followed by stealing the ball and scoring for 2 more, giving
Ohio Wesleyan a 37-34 lead.
The Bishops built the lead to 54-45, not allowing the Spartans to score
twice in a row until the final 7 minutes of the half.
Heil led Ohio Wesleyan with 27 points. Brizendine and Nanney each contributed
10 points and shared the team lead with 3 assists. Ray grabbed a team-leading
7 rebounds.
Horton topped the Spartans with 18 points and 16 rebounds, while Herendeen
and Hammell added 13 points apiece. Keesha Allen added 11 points, 9 rebounds
and a game-high 7 assists.
