Washington & Jefferson 75, Ohio Wesleyan 68

Nov. 26, 2004

Sophomore guard Emily Lloyd (Canton/Massillon Jackson) fueled a 17-2 second-half run that wiped out a 13-point deficit, but Washington & Jefferson recovered and held off Ohio Wesleyan in non-conference action on Monday at Branch Rickey Arena.

With the Bishops trailing, 52-39, with 13:26 to play, Lloyd and junior guard Amanda Nanney (Cincinnati/Mother of Mercy) drilled 3-pointers to start the Bishop comeback.

Amanda Stanonik hit a lay-in to restore the Presidents' lead to 54-45, but Ohio Wesleyan answered with a jumper by senior post Erica Brizendine (Grove City).

Lloyd followed with a steal and lay-in, and after a Washington & Jefferson miss, Lloyd buried another 3-pointer to make it 54-52. Sophomore guard Rachel Messaros (Granville/Columbus Bishop Hartley) then hit a runner from the lane to tie the game at 54-54, and Lloyd kicked in another steal and lay-in to give Ohio Wesleyan a 56-54 lead with 9:24 to play.

The Presidents took the lead for good when Sheana Malyszka hit a pair of free throws to break a 60-60 tie with 3:41 to play, and Washington & Jefferson still led by a basket at 70-68 with :55 left in regulation time when Dayna Greenfield hit a jumper and after a Bishop turnover, sank one of 2 from the line to make it a 73-68 game with :15 to play. Leigh Sulkowski added a pair of free throws with less than a second to play to account for the 75-68 final.

Washington & Jefferson threatened to pull away in the first half, stretching a 19-17 lead into a 32-21 margin on the strength of 2 baskets and 3 free throws by Sulkowski. The Presidents led, 35-25, at halftime, and Lauren Slampak scored the first points of the second half to increase the lead to a dozen.

Ohio Wesleyan quickly closed to within 4 points, with senior wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview) and Brizendine each scoring a pair of buckets, but the Presidents answered with 9 straight points to take a 49-36 lead with 14:46 left in regulation time.

Brizendine led Ohio Wesleyan with 26 points, while Heil added 16 points and Lloyd finished with a career-high 12 points. Brizendine and Heil shared the team lead with 6 rebounds apiece and Heil dished out a team-high 4 assists.

Sulkowski led the Presidents with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Greenfield added 15 points and led W&J with 5 assists, Slampak scored 13 poitns and Malyszka scored 11 points.
