Ohio Wesleyan 77, Oberlin 67

Dec. 1, 2004

Sophomore post Tifini Ray (Hilliard/Davidson) and junior guard Julie Schlenkerman (Lakewood) each scored 5 points during a 13-0 second-half run and senior post Erica Brizendine (Grove City) and senior wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview) later combined for 9 straight points to ice the win as Ohio Wesleyan defeated Oberlin in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Wednesday in Oberlin.

Ohio Wesleyan threatened to run off with the game early as Heil and sophomore guard Emily Lloyd (Canton/Massillon Jackson) drilled 3-pointers to highlight a 16-6 run that turned a 7-6 Bishop lead into a 23-12 advantage with 8:03 left in the first half.

The Yeowomen still trailed by 11 points at 30-19 with 3:40 to go in the period but outscored the Bishops, 9-1, over the remainder of the half to close to within 30-27 at the break. Jessica Oram had a pair of jumpers and Cristina Briboneria added a 3-pointer to spark the Oberlin offense.

It was still a 3-point game at 40-37 nearly 6 minutes into the second half when the Bishops took off on their 13-0 spree. Junior guard Amanda Nanney (Cincinnati/Mother of Mercy) started things off with a 3-pointer before Ray contributed a 3-point play and a lay-in, and, not to be outdone, Schlenkerman also added a 3-point play and a lay-in to give the Bishops a 53-37 lead with 11:39 remaining.

Oberlin clawed back to within 6 points behind the scoring of Oram, who had 6 points, including 4 straight free throws, and Briboneria, who buried a timely 3-pointer. The Yeowomen had the deficit pared down to 59-53, and after Heil and Briboneria traded 3-pointers, it was a 62-56 game with 4:49 to play.

Heil and Brizendine then took over, with each contributing a lay-in before a Brizendine 3-point play and another Heil lay-up boosted the Bishop advantage to 71-56 with 3:08 left, effectively sealing the outcome.

Brizendine led Ohio Wesleyan with 23 points and shared the team lead with 7 rebounds. Heil added 20 points, dished out a team-high 4 assists and also shared the team lead with 7 rebounds.

Oram topped the Yeowomen with 24 points, while Nicole Burford finished with 21 points and Briboneria added 20 points and a game-high 8 rebounds.
