Ohio Wesleyan 70, Hiram 46

Senior wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview) scored 3 straight baskets to cap a 10-0 run that gave Ohio Wesleyan the lead for good and the Bishops went on to defeat Hiram in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Cassie Bedard had scored for Hiram to tie the game at 8-8 midway through the first half. Sophomore guard Rachel Messaros (Granville/Bishop Hartley) answered with a bucket to put the Bishops ahead to stay and senior post Erica Brizendine (Grove City) added a lay-in before Heil's 3 straight hoops stretched the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 18-8 with 7:30 left in the first half.

The Terriers closed to within 18-12 on baskets by Tania Carman and Bedard, but Ohio Wesleyan responded with 6 straight points, 3 of them by senior post Shelby Larson (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows), to make the score 24-12 with 4:59 left, and the Bishop lead remained in double digits for the rest of the game.

Heil led the Bishops with 18 points, while Brizendine finished with 15 points. Larson and freshman guard Steffi Graf (Poland/Seminary) shared the team lead with 6 rebounds apiece and Heil dished out a team-high 3 assists.

Bedard led Hiram with 14 points. Jessica Harris had a game-high 12 rebounds and Valerie Goudy led the Terriers with 3 assists.
