Ohio Wesleyan 76, Mount Union 74

[ Tifini Ray ]Sophomore post Tifini Ray (Hilliard/Davidson) sank a pair of free throws with :19 to play to break a 74-74 tie and junior guard Amanda Nanney (Cincinnati/Mother of Mercy) came up with a steal in the closing seconds to seal a non-conference win over Mount Union on Monday in Alliance.

Ohio Wesleyan raced to an early 15-4 lead, getting 3-pointers from senior wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview) and senior guard Celina Dopoulos (Strongsville) to lead the way.

The Bishops extended their first-half lead to 21-7 as Dopoulos, Heil and Ray contributed baskets, and Ohio Wesleyan still led by a margin of 24-10 with 10:59 left in the first half.

Mount Union sliced the deficit to 27-23, coming back with a basket and a pair of free throws by Kyla Hogan and a basket and a free throw from Ashley Bourdeau.

The Purple Raiders came back to within a point early in the second half, closing to within 41-40 on Ashley Ross's fast break lay-in with 16:49 left.

Holding on to a 52-50 lead midway through the period, Ohio Wesleyan threatened to put the game away with an 8-0 run. Heil buried a 3-pointer at the halfway mark, then junior guard Jenny Johnson (Delaware/Hayes) followed with a 3-pointer and freshman post Kelli Lester (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) added a fast break bucket to hike the Bishop lead to 60-50.

Ohio Wesleyan still led, 64-54, when the Purple Raiders rallied. Lisa Dubinsky and Bourdeau led the Mount Union comeback, with Bourdeau sinking a basket and a pair of free throws and Dubinsky converting a 3-point play and adding 2 more hoops, as the Purple Raiders closed to within 66-65 with 4:55 to go.

Dopoulos hit a free throw to end Mount Union's 11-2 run, but the Purple Raiders tied the game at 67-67 on Hogan's basket with 4:16 remaining.

After Mount Union's Jen Brozak hit the second of 2 free throws to tie the game at 72-72 with 1:28 left, the Bishops took a 74-72 lead on a pair of free throws by Dopoulos with :44 remaining, only to see the Purple Raiders tie the game at 74 on Kyla Hogan's basket with :35 to go.

Heil led Ohio Wesleyan with 22 points and 15 rebounds and shared the team lead with 3 assists. Ray added 15 points and Dopoulos finished with 14 points and shared the team lead with 3 assists. Sophomore guard Emily Lloyd (Canton/Massillon Jackson) also shared the team lead with 3 assists.

Bourdeau led the Purple Raiders with 17 points. Hogan added 15 points, Dubinsky added 14 points and led Mount Union with 12 boards, and Ross scored 11 points.
