Wesleyan 10, Cortland State 8
second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) slammed a walk-off 3-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Bishops over second-ranked Cortland State on Saturday in Port Charlotte, Fla.
Trailing, 8-7, going into the bottom of the ninth, the Bishops got a one-out single from senior shortstop Brandon Williams (Dublin/Coffman) before sophomore second baseman Jerrell Johnson (Shaker Heights) lashed a pinch-hit double to right center. Sherman followed with a home run on an 0-2 count to end the game.
It marked the second straight season in which Sherman homered to give Ohio Wesleyan a win over a ranked opponent in its season opener. Last year, Sherman's 11th-inning blast gave the Bishops a 6-5 win over 10th-ranked Aurora.
Williams and senior outfielder Adam Toney (Galloway/Westland) each went 3-for-4 to spark the Ohio Wesleyan offense.
Junior righthander Sean Ring (Hilliard/Davidson), who came on in relief in the top of the ninth inning, was the winning pitcher. Senior righthander Michael Krieger (Boardman) started for the Bishops, senior righthander Billy Kampmann (Blairstown,
relieved in the fourth and sophomore righthander Sean Speed (Cincinnati/St. Xavier) came on in the fifth.
