Ohio Wesleyan 8, Becker 4

March 16, 2006

Senior outfielder Adam Toney (Galloway/Westland) drove in 4 runs in the opener and sophomore outfielder Josh Wheeler (Columbus/Dublin Scioto) drove in 3 runs in the nightcap as Ohio Wesleyan swept a doubleheader from Becker on Thursday in Port Charlotte, Fla.

The Bishops jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first inning of the opener as senior shortstop Brandon Williams (Dublin/Coffman) led off with a walk, stole second and scored on a single by sophomore shortstop Donnie Paul (Lewis Center/Olentangy). Junior second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) followed with a walk before Toney scored both runners with a triple. Senior third baseman Sammy Hall (North Riverside, Ill./Nazareth Academy) drove in Toney with a sacrifice fly.

Becker came back with a run in the second and 2 in the third to close within 4-3, but the Bishops scored 7 times in the bottom of the third to break the game open.

Sherman, Toney and Hall opened the inning with consecutive doubles, plating 2 runs. Hall then moved to third on a sacrifice and scored on a single by freshman outfielder John Maggard (Worthington/Thomas Worthington). Freshman catcher Ty Leavitt (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) was hit by a pitch and junior outfielder Sean Ring (Hilliard/Davidson) singled to load the bases. Williams drove in a run with a single and Paul singled home 2 more runs, and Toney knocked in the final run of the frame with a fielder's choice.

Senior righthander Adam Dunn (Westerville/Worthington Christian) worked the complete game on the mound for Ohio Wesleyan, allowing 1 earned run and striking out 6.

In the nightcap, the Bishops scored 3 runs in the second and 2 in the third to take a 5-0 lead and went on to complete the sweep.

Sophomore first baseman A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) opened the second inning with a double and Maggard walked. Sophomore catcher Eric Stitzlein (Loudonville) sacrificed the runners but was safe on an error on the play. Wheeler then singled in a run and Williams drew a walk to force in another run, then Sherman lofted a fly ball to left to drive in the third run of the inning.

Stitzlein and Wheeler collected RBI singles in the third, Maggard had an RBI single in the fifth and squeezed home a run in the seventh and Wheeler added another RBI single in the seventh.

Dote and Wheeler each went 3-for-4 to highlight the Bishop offense.

Freshman righthander Anthony Lewis (Grove City) pitched the first 5.0 innings, allowing 5 hits and a run, to pick up the mound decision.
