March
27, 2006
Senior
third baseman Sammy Hall (North Riverside, Ill./Nazareth Academy) drove
in 7 runs in support of senior righthander Adam Dunn (Westerville/Worthington
Christian) and sophomore righthander Xander Jones (Pomfret, Conn./Pomfret
School) as Ohio Wesleyan swept a North Coast Athletic Conference West
Division doubleheader from Earlham on Monday at Littick Field.
In the opener, the Bishops scratched out a run in the first when junior
second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) singled with 2
out, stole second and scored on a single by senior outfielder Adam Toney
(Galloway/Westland).
Hall slammed a 2-run homer to highlight Ohio Wesleyan's 3-run fourth inning,
then plated a run with a sacrifice fly during the Bishops' 2-run sixth
frame. Sophomore first baseman A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne)
added an RBI double during the sixth.
Earlham got on the scoreboard in the seventh when Derreck Parkevich led
off with a walk, moved to third on Dunn's throwing error and scored on
a Cal Wilson single.
Dunn bounced back to retire the side and finish off the complete game.
He scattered 4 hits, struck out 10 and walked one while allowing the one
unearned run.
Hall drove in 3 runs, while Toney went 3-for-3 with 2 runs scored and
2 RBI.
In the nightcap, the Bishops jumped on Quaker starter Eric Sturgeon for
7 runs in the first inning and never looked back on the way to sweeping
the doubleheader and the series.
Sherman had an RBI single, Hall belted a 3-run homer, sophomore catcher
Eric Stitzlein (Loudonville) had an RBI single and sophomore infielder
Donny Paul (Lewis Center/Olentangy) plated a run with a sacrifice fly
during the Bishops' first-inning rally.
Ohio Wesleyan added 2 in the second on RBIs by sophomore second baseman
Jerrell Johnson (Shaker Heights) and Stitzlein, then scored 3 more in
the third, with Hall and junior first baseman Tom Bottichio (Mason) smacking
RBI doubles.
Earlham scored twice in the fourth as Sturgeon scored on a wild pitch
and Kyle Bond plated a run with an infield out.
The Bishops scored 4 times in the fifth, with Johnson's 2-run single the
big hit, and once in the sixth.
Hall went 3-for-3 with 4 RBI and 2 runs scored to pace the Bishop offense.
Johnson drove in 3 runs and senior shortstop Brandon Williams (Dublin/Coffman)
also went 3-for-3.
Jones pitched the first 6.0 innings, allowing 5 hits while striking out
7 and walking one. Junior righthander Sean Ring (Hilliard/Davidson) finished
up on the mound.
