Ohio Wesleyan 10, Wittenberg 3

April 1, 2006

Senior third baseman Sammy Hall (North Riverside, Ill./Nazareth Academy) and junior second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) drove in first-inning runs and Ohio Wesleyan built a 10-0 lead on the way to a win in the nightcap of a North Coast Athletic Conference West Division doubleheader against Wittenberg on Saturday in Springfield.

In the opener, Wittenberg rallied from a 3-0 deficit to send the game into extra innings, then scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 11th inning.

With one out in the first inning of the nightcap, sophomore first baseman A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) and senior shortstop Brandon Williams (Dublin/Coffman) drew back-to-back walks before Hall ripped a run-scoring double and Sherman followed with a single to score Williams.

The Bishops added 3 runs in the fourth, with senior outfielder Adam Toney (Galloway/Westland) driving an RBI single, Dote following with a triple to score Toney and Williams plating Dote with an infield grounder.

Ohio Wesleyan scored 4 times in the fifth, highlighted by a 2-run double by sophomore outfielder Joey McDaniel (Dublin/Scioto), with Dote driving home a run with a sacrifice fly and sophomore catcher Eric Stitzlein (Loudonville) adding an RBI single.

Freshman shortstop Logan Hronis (Rocky River/St. Edward) had an RBI double in the seventh to wrap up the Bishop scoring.

Wittenberg got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh, plating 3 runs on 6 hits.

Sophomore righthander Sean Speed (Cincinnati/St. Xavier) pitched the first 6.0 innings, shutting out the Tigers on 3 hits while striking out 3 and walking one. Junior righthander Sean Ring (Hilliard/Davidson) finished up on the mound for the Bishops.

Tyler McClain was the starting and losing pitcher for Wittenberg.

Ohio Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the opener when Hall doubled, continued to third on an error by Tiger rightfielder Patrick Williams and scored on a ground out by junior first baseman Tom Bottichio (Mason).

The Bishops increased their lead to 3-0 in the fourth. Sherman was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, then scored all the way from first on an error by Tiger third baseman on Toney's fielder's choice grounder. After Hall was hit by a pitch, McDaniel singled in Toney.

Wittenberg assembled singles by Andrew Wellman, Jacob Michael and Matt Berry in the bottom of the fifth to close within 3-1, then sent the game into extra innings on Matt Steinke's 2-run homer in the bottom of the seventh.

The Tigers pushed across the winning run in the 11th when Michael tripled with one out and scored on a wild pitch.

Senior righthander Michael Krieger (Boardman) worked the first 9.0 innings for the Bishops, scattering 7 hits and striking out 8 and walking 3. Ring pitched the last 1.1 innings and was charged with the loss.

Jason Holmberg pitched the complete game for Wittenberg, holding the Bishops to 7 hits in 11.0 innings. He struck out 6 and did not walk a batter
