Marietta 9, Ohio Wesleyan 6

April 6, 2006

Chris Hendricks and Lee Guerrera homered to help Marietta take a 9-3 lead and the Pioneers held off a furious Ohio Wesleyan rally in the ninth inning to escape Littick Field with a non-conference win on Thursday.

Marietta took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a walk to Ryan Belanger, singles by Jarrod Klausman and Justin Steranka, 3 stolen bases and a sacrifice fly by Joe Litke.

Ohio Wesleyan answered with 3 runs in the bottom of the inning. Senior shortstop Brandon Williams (Dublin/Coffman) led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice by sophomore first baseman A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne). Senior outfielder Adam Toney (Galloway/Westland) walked and junior second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) followed with a single to score Williams. After an infield out moved the runners to second and third, freshman outfielder John Maggard (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) grounded to short, but Pioneer shortstop Ryan Eschbaugh misplayed the ball, allowing 2 runs to score.

The Pioneers got 3 runs in the third, with Klausman, Steranka and Litke driving in runs. Hendricks hit a 2-run homer in the fourth and Guerrera added a solo shot in the fifth for a 9-3 margin.

The Bishops rallied in the ninth. With one out, junior first baseman Tom Bottichio (Mason), sophomore infielder Donnie Paul (Lewis Center/Olentangy) and sophomore outfielder Brent Wilkins (Fairview Park/Fairview) lined consecutive singles to score one run. Williams followed with a double to the gap in right center to score Paul and Wilkins, and when Dote drew a walk, it brought Toney to the plate as the tying run for Ohio Wesleyan, but the Bishops were not able to push across any more runners.

Sophomore lefthander Joey McDaniel (Dublin/Scioto) was the starting and losing pitcher for Ohio Wesleyan. Junior righthander Sean Ring (Hilliard/Davidson) worked 2.2 innings of hitless relief and senior righthander Adam Dunn (Westerville/Worthington Christian) retired the Pioneers in order in the ninth.

Scott Dunn was the starting and winning pitcher for Marietta, pitching 6.0 innings and scattering 6 hits. Mike Eisenberg, who came on to get the final out, was credited with a save.
