Heidelberg 12, Ohio Wesleyan 10

April 11, 2006

Sophomore outfielder Brent Wilkins (Fairview Park/Fairview) singled in 2 runs to give the Bishops a 10-9 lead in the top of the seventh, but Heidelberg rallied for 3 runs in the bottom of the inning to take a non-conference win over Ohio Wesleyan on Tuesday in Tiffin.

Ohio Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead in the first when senior shortstop Brandon Williams (Dublin/Coffman) walked, moved to second on a sacrifice, stole third and scored on sacrifice fly by sophomore first baseman A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne).

Heidelberg took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning on Tyler Tocco's 2-run single, but the Bishops bounced back with 4 runs in the top of the third, with Dote lofting another sacrifice fly and senior third baseman Sammy Hall (North Riverside, Ill./Nazareth Academy) slamming a 3-run homer.

The Student Princes closed to within 5-3 in the bottom of the inning on A.J. Schlea's RBI double.

Ohio Wesleyan got that run back when junior first baseman Tom Bottichio (Mason) led off the fourth with a home run and added 2 more runs in the inning on an RBI single by freshman outfielder John Maggard (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) and a lineout by Dote.

Matt Decker, Jeremy Wentworth and Tony Pawlowicz drove in runs to bring Heidelberg within 8-6 in the bottom of the fourth, and the Student Princes took a 9-8 lead on Biagio Boytim's 3-run homer in the sixth.

Wilkins' RBI single gave the Bishops a 10-9 lead in the seventh, scoring Dote and senior outfielder Adam Toney (Galloway/Westland), who had singled earlier in the inning.

L.B. Emrhein was hit by a pitch to lead off the Heidelberg seventh inning, and moved to second on a single by Steve Calevro. Decker forced Calevro at second for the first out of the inning, but Wentworth singled in the tying run and the go-ahead run scored on an error by Bishop centerfielder Maggard, with Wentworth advancing to third on the play. Wentworth
scored on a wild pitch for a 12-10 Heidelberg lead.

Ohio Wesleyan threatened in the eighth, loading the bases with one out on walks to Maggard, Dote and Hall, but Student Prince reliever David Paddock worked out of the jam to preserve the lead.

Maggard went 3-for-3 to highlight the Bishop offense, while Dote and Hall drove in 3 runs apiece.

Sophomore righthander Sean Speed (Cincinnati/St. Xavier) was the losing pitcher in relief for Ohio Wesleyan
.
