Wesleyan 10, Wabash 0
Ohio Wesleyan 10, Wabash 4
April
14, 2006
Sophomore
first baseman A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) went 6-for-6
and drove in 8 runs to lead Ohio Wesleyan to a sweep of a North Coast
Athletic Conference West Division doubleheader from Wabash on Friday at
Littick Field.
The sweep clinches a spot for Ohio Wesleyan in the upcoming NCAC tournament.
The Bishops have an 11-3 divisional record and can finish no worse than
second in the West Division standings. The top 2 teams from each division
make the NCAC semifinals, scheduled for April 29-30, with the first-place
school from each division hosting the second-place team from the opposite
division.
Ohio Wesleyan took a 3-0 lead in the second inning of the opener. Freshman
catcher Ty Leavitt (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) drew a one-out walk
and was forced at second by junior outfielder Sean Ring (Hilliard/Davidson).
Senior shortstop Brandon Williams (Dublin/Coffman) singled Ring to third,
then followed with a steal of second base, and both runners scored on
a single by freshman outfielder John Maggard (Worthington/Thomas Worthington).
After junior second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) was
hit by a pitch, Dote singled home Maggard.
Ohio Wesleyan added 2 runs in the fourth when Williams singled, Sherman
singled and Dote singled home Williams, with Sherman advancing to third
on the play. Dote then took off for second and got caught in a rundown,
with Sherman scoring before the tag was applied to end the inning.
The Bishops broke the game open with 5 runs in the sixth, highlighted
by an RBI single from senior third baseman Sammy Hall (North Riverside,
Ill./Nazareth Academy) driving an RBI single, a 2-run double by junior
first baseman Tom Bottichio (Mason) and an RBI single by senior outfielder
Adam Toney (Galloway/Westland).
Dote went 3-for-3 with 2 RBI, while Sherman was 3-for-3 with 2 runs scored.
Senior righthander Michael Krieger (Boardman) fired a 3-hit shutout, striking
out 4 and walking one, to move to 5-0 on the season.
Chris Schmaltz was the starting and losing pitcher for Wabash.
In the nightcap, the Little Giants took a 1-0 lead in the first inning
when David Culp led off with a single and continued to second when the
ball eluded leftfielder Ring, moved to third on an infield out and scored
on Jared Bogan's ground-rule double.
The Bishops answered with 4 runs in the bottom of the first. Williams
reached on an error by Little Giant shortstop Matt Dodaro and moved to
second on Maggard's sacrifice. Sherman then beat out an infield single,
sending Williams to third, and Williams then scored on the front end of
a double steal, tying the game at 1-1. Dote followed with a 2-run blast
to left center for 3-0 lead. Wabash pitcher Andy Weeks then got Hall to
strike out on a ball in the dirt, but Little Giant catcher Justin VanderIest
saw his throw to first hit Hall in the back for an error, allowing Hall
to reach first safely. Bottichio followed with a single and Toney then
reached on an error by Dodaro, with Hall scoring on the play.
Sherman and Toney drove in runs in the second for a 6-1 Bishop lead, and
Dote slammed a 3-run homer in the third to increase the margin to 9-1.
Mike Nowak singled in a run for Wabash in the top of the fifth, but the
Bishops got that run back in the bottom of the inning on Dote's RBI single
up the middle.
Wabash's Phil Ramos slugged a 2-run homer in the sixth to finish off the
day's scoring.
Dote went 3-for-3 and plated 6 runs, while Maggard was 2-for-2 with 2
runs scored and Williams scored 3 times.
Sophomore righthander Sean Speed (Cincinnati/St. Xavier) worked the first
6.0 innings for the Bishops, scattering 6 hits and striking out 2 while
walking one.
Weeks was the starting and losing pitcher for Wabash.
