(Mason) and sophomore outfielder Donnie Paul (Lewis Center/Olentangy)
drove in 3 runs apiece in the nightcap as Ohio Wesleyan wrapped up its
North Coast Athletic Conference West Division schedule with a doubleheader
sweep of Wabash on Saturday at Littick Field.
The doubleheader sweep clinches the NCAC West division title for Ohio
Wesleyan. The division title is Ohio Wesleyan's fifth in the 7 seasons
of NCAC divisional play but the Bishops' first since 2003. The Bishops
will host the second-place team from the NCAC East Division in an NCAC
tournament semifinal series on Sat.-Sun., April 29-30, at Littick Field.
In the opener, senior righthander Adam Dunn (Westerville/Worthington Christian)
and Wabash's John Thiry traded zeroes through the first 2 innings before
the Bishops got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third. Williams
led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice by freshman outfielder
John Maggard (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) and scored on Sherman's
triple.
The Bishops added another run in the fourth when senior outfielder Adam
Toney (Galloway/Westland) reached on a fielder's choice, stole second
and scored on a single by freshman catcher Ty Leavitt (Worthington/Thomas
Worthington).
Ohio Wesleyan stretched its lead to 5-0 in the fifth, with Sherman lining
a 2-run triple and later scoring on a wild pitch.
Wabash broke through against Dunn in the fifth, getting an RBI double
from Matt Dodaro and scoring another run on Dunn's throwing error.
The Bishops broke the game open in the bottom of the inning, however,
putting up 9 runs. Williams had an RBI triple and a 2-run double in the
inning, while Sherman and Toney each blasted a 2-run homer.
Williams went 4-for-5 with 4 runs scored and 3 RBI, while Sherman was
4-for-4 with 2 runs scored and 5 RBI.
Dunn worked the complete game for the Bishops, allowing 7 hits while striking
out 3 and walking 2.
Thiry was the starting and losing pitcher for Wabash.
In the nightcap, the Little Giants staked pitcher Travis Moore to a 3-0
lead when Chris Sides belted a 3-run homer in the top of the first inning.
Ohio Wesleyan evened the game in the bottom of the inning, getting a run
on an infield grounder by sophomore first baseman A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington
Kilbourne) and tying the game on Hall's 2-run homer.
The Bishops took the lead in the second when Toney walked, stole second,
moved to third on Leavitt's sacrifice and scored on Paul's single to left.
Ohio Wesleyan broke the game open in the third, posting 7 runs to take
an 11-3 lead. Dote had an RBI single, Hall lofted a sacrifice fly, Bottichio
slammed a 2-run homer, Leavitt lined an RBI single and Paul cracked a
2-run homer to drove home the Bishop runs.
Bottichio added a solo homer in the fourth and junior outfielder Sean
Ring (Hilliard/Davidson) smashed a 2-run shot in the sixth.
Phil Ramos hit a 3-run homer in the fifth to finish off the Wabash scoring.
Leavitt went 2-for-2, while Maggard and Paul each went 2-for-3 and Bottichio
was 2-for-4 with a pair of circuit clouts.
