Ohio Wesleyan 8, Muskingum 7

April 20, 2006

Junior first baseman Tom Bottichio (Mason) belted his second home run of the game, a leadoff shot in the bottom of the 10th inning, to give Ohio Wesleyan a non-conference win over Muskingum on Thursday at Littick Field.

The Muskies took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Shawn Galloway led off with a single down the rightfield line, stole second, moved to third on an errant pickoff attempt and scored on Brock Huntsman's single down the leftfield line.

Ohio Wesleyan answered in the bottom of the inning when senior shortstop Brandon Williams (Dublin/Coffman) drew a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on a homer by junior second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto).

Muskingum responded with 2 runs in the top of the second. Adam Hesler led off with a single to center and Adam Smith followed with a single down the leftfield line. Seth Sibert then grounded to Williams, who threw wildly to second in an attempt to force Smith, with Hesler scoring and Smith going to third on the play. Sophomore righthander Sean Speed (Cincinnati/St. Xavier) then induced Tyler Gibbs to bounce into an around-the-horn double play, with Smith scoring on the play for a 3-2 Muskingum lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Sherman once again erased a Bishop deficit, slamming a drive to center that hit the top of the fence and continued over for his second round-tripper of the game, scoring freshman outfielder John Maggard (Worthington/Thomas Worthington), who had walked.

Sophomore first baseman A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) followed with a single, and senior third baseman Sammy Hall (North Riverside, Ill./Nazareth Academy) drove a double into the gap in right center that chased Muskingum starter Adam Stein.

Bottichio greeted reliever Tony Yarnall with a homer to left that stretched the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 7-3.

Muskingum rallied to tie the game in the top of the seventh. Galloway led off with a walk and Bill Rockwell followed with a single to left. Huntsman then hit a grounder into the hole that shortstop Williams got to but had no play upon, with the single loading the bases.

Freshman righthander Kevin Miller (Johnstown/Johnstown-Monroe) came on in relief and retired Greg King on a sacrifice fly for the first out. Brandon Casey then followed with a chopper toward the hole that Hall got to but slipped before he could make a play, with the single reloading the bases. Miller then struck out Adam Hesler for the second out, but Adam Smith singled through the right side, scoring 2 runs to bring the Muskies within 7-6, and Sibert singled up the middle to tie the game at 7-7.

Miller gave up a leadoff walk in the eighth and was relieved by senior righthander Adam Dunn (Westerville/Worthington Christian), who shut down the Muskingum offense.

Muskingum reliever Jacob Schrader was doing the same thing to the Bishops, pitching out of a jam in the eighth inning and working a scoreless ninth before yielding Bottichio's leadoff shot in the 10th.

Sherman went 3-for-5 and Bottichio was 2-for-4, with each player driving in 4 runs. Dote also was 2-for-4.

Dunn, who retired all 9 Muskingum batters he faced, was the winning pitcher in relief. Schrader was charged with the loss
