Ohio Wesleyan 10, Wooster 8

April 23, 2006

[ Brandon Williams ]Senior shortstop Brandon Williams (Dublin/Coffman) lined a solo homer to break a 7-7 tie and put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay, then singled in an insurance run to help the Bishops take a non-conference win over Wooster on Sunday at Littick Field.

The win was the Bishops' first against the Fighting Scots since a victory in the 2002 NCAA Division III Mideast Regional tournament, but it was Ohio Wesleyan's third in the last 4 regular-season meetings with Wooster. Prior to this weekend's home-and-home series with the Fighting Scots, the teams had not met during the regular season since 2000, when Ohio Wesleyan swept a doubleheader in Wooster.

For Wooster, ranked No. 1 in this week's ABCA Division III rankings, the
loss snapped a 16-game winning streak.

With the score tied at 7-7 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Williams greeted reliever Walt Samson with a leadoff homer down the leftfield line. One out later, junior second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) doubled, and one out later, senior third baseman Sammy Hall (North Riverside, Ill./Nazareth Academy) singled home Sherman for a 9-7 Bishop lead.

The Scots closed to within 9-8 in the top of the seventh when John Quimby drew a 2-out walk and scored on Jake Sankal's pinch-hit double to left center.

Ohio Wesleyan got that run back in the bottom of the inning as senior outfielder Adam Toney (Galloway/Westland) drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored on Williams' single to right center.

Wooster threatened in the top of the ninth, with Quimby drawing a 2-out walk and pinch-hitter Pat Christensen keeping the inning alive with a single, but Brock Busson bounced out to end the game.

Ohio Wesleyan had jumped to a 4-0 first-inning lead. With one out, freshman outfielder John Maggard (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) walked. Sherman then grounded to Wooster shortstop Quimby, who did not field the ball cleanly and then flipped it wide of second, with Maggard arriving safely. Sophomore first baseman A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) then grounded to Scot second baseman Bubba O'Donnell, who tried to tag Sherman going by but dropped the ball for an error, with all runners arriving safely to load the bases. That brought up Hall, who sent a ball over the fence in left center for a grand slam.

Wooster got those runs back in the top of the second, loading the bases with nobody out before Kurt Kapferer scored on a wild pitch. After Shaun Swearingen walked to reload the bases, Quimby lined a double down the leftfield line to score 2 runs and the Scots tied the game on Sean Karpen's sacrifice fly.

Kapferer hit a solo homer and Swearingen added an RBI double later in the inning to give Wooster a 6-4 lead in the third.

Ohio Wesleyan got one run back in the bottom of the inning on a bases-loaded walk to freshman catcher Ty Leavitt (Worthington/Thomas Worthington), then took a 7-6 lead on Toney's 2-run homer in the fifth, only to see Wooster even the game in the sixth on Oliver Enos' 2-out RBI single.

Hall went 3-for-4 with 5 RBI and Williams was 3-for-5 with 2 RBI to highlight the Bishop offense.

Sophomore righthander Xander Jones (Pomfret, Conn./Pomfret School) pitched the first 5.0 innings and senior righthander Adam Dunn (Westerville/Worthington Christian) came on in the sixth and finished up to earn the victory in relief.
