Thomas More 11, Ohio Wesleyan 8

April 26, 2006

Sophomore first baseman A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) singled in the tying run in the sixth as Ohio Wesleyan erased an 8-4 deficit, but Thomas More pushed across a run in the seventh and 2 more in the eighth to hold on for a non-conference win on Wednesday in Crestview Hills, Ky.

Ohio Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when freshman outfielder John Maggard (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) lashed a one-out double and scored on Dote's single, with Dote taking second on the throw to the plate. Senior third baseman Sammy Hall (North Riverside, Ill./Nazareth Academy) followed with a single, but Dote was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.

The Saints answered in the bottom of the inning when Brad Thoma clubbed a 2-out double and scored on Fred Riess' single up the middle.

The Bishops added 3 runs in the third on an RBI single by senior outfielder Adam Toney (Galloway/Westland) and a 2-run single by junior outfielder Sean Ring (Hilliard/Davidson), but again Thomas More responded in kind, evening the score with 3 runs in the bottom of the inning. Thoma lined a 2-run single down the leftfield line, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Riess' infield out to tie the game at 4-4.

Thomas More took an 8-4 lead in the fourth, loading the bases with one out on 3 walks. Dustin Brown walked to force in a run, Marc Price followed with an infield single, Thoma walked to force in a run and Riess plated a run with a sacrifice fly.

Ohio Wesleyan evened the game in the top of the sixth. Freshman catcher Josh Dougherty (Hilliard/Davidson) singled with one out, sophomore outfielder Josh Wheeler (Columbus/Dublin Scioto) followed with a walk and senior shortstop Brandon Williams (Dublin/Coffman) lined a single to score Dougherty and slice the deficit to 8-5. Maggard followed with an infield single to score Wheeler and Williams scored on an error by Saint shortstop Thoma. Dote followed with a single to score Maggard, with
junior second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto), who had reached on the error, thrown out at third on the play. Hall followed with a walk, but Saint reliever Adam Sargent came on and got Toney on a comebacker to end the inning.

The Saints took the lead in the seventh when Thoma led off with a double, Riess was hit by a pitch and Pat Berndsen dropped a bunt single to load the bases with nobody out. Senior righthander Michael Krieger (Boardman), who came on in relief to start the inning, got Brad Ketterer to foul out, but Johnny Lee was able to plate the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly before Krieger worked out of the jam.

Ohio Wesleyan threatened in the eighth, loading the bases with none out as Maggard reached on an error, Sherman walked and Dote singled, but reliever Josh Elleman retired Hall on a fly ball to right and Frank Engoglia came on and got Toney to rap into a double play to end the inning.

Berndsen's 2-run triple in the eighth gave the Saints some insurance.

Dote went 3-for-4 and drove in 2 runs to highlight the Bishop offense. Maggard, Hall, Toney and Ring had 2 hits apiece.

Krieger was charged with the loss in relief, his first loss in 6 decisions this season.

Sargent was the winning pitcher for Thomas More, with Engoglia credited with a save.
