Wooster 11, Ohio Wesleyan 8

May 4, 2006

Senior shortstop Brandon Williams (Dublin/Coffman) scored to give Ohio Wesleyan a 1-0 lead, but Wooster bounced back to take a 9-1 lead and held on to take a win in Game 1 of the North Coast Athletic Conference championship series on Thursday night at Carleton Davidson Stadium in Springfield.

The Bishops took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Williams singled, moved to second on a sacrifice by freshman outfielder John Maggard (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) and scored when Wooster shortstop John Quimby misplayed a ball off the bat of junior second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto).

Wooster bounced back with 5 runs in the top of the second. Oliver Enos led off with a single and Brandon Boesiger followed with a double before Rob Romick lofted a home run down the leftfield line for a 3-1 Fighting Scot lead. One out later, Quimby walked and scored on a double by Shaun Swearingen, and Swearingen later scored on an error by senior third baseman Sammy Hall (North Riverside, Ill./Nazareth Academy).

Dan Skulina led off the fourth inning with a solo homer for a 6-1 Wooster lead, and tacked on 3 more runs in the fifth on Boesiger's RBI double and sacrifice flies by Romick and Skulina.

Maggard lined an RBI single and Sherman belted a 2-run homer to bring the Bishops within 9-4 in the bottom of the fifth.

The teams traded runs in the sixth, with Wooster scoring on Enos' RBI single and Ohio Wesleyan answering with Williams' run-scoring double.

Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 10-6 in the eighth when junior first baseman Tom Bottichio (Mason) led off with a single and senior outfielder Adam Toney (Galloway/Westland) followed with a single. Two outs later, Williams' bouncer to Scot third baseman Skulina was misplayed, allowing senior outfielder Brian Gamble (Massillon/Perry), who had pinch-run for Bottichio, to score.

Wooster added an unearned run in the ninth, allowing the Scots to withstand Toney's 2-run double in the bottom of the inning.

Toney went 3-for-5 to highlight the Bishop offense, while Williams and Sherman had 2 hits apiece.

Senior righthander Michael Krieger (Boardman) was the starting and losing pitcher for Ohio Wesleyan
