Ohio Wesleyan 24, Oberlin 14

Nov. 5, 2005

[ Ryan Sir Louis ]Senior quarterback Ryan Sir Louis (Hinckley/Highland) tossed 2 touchdown passes and senior halfback Matt Carducci (Hudson) ran for a score as Ohio Wesleyan defeated Oberlin in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Saturday at Selby Field.

Ohio Wesleyan had the only scoring threat during the first quarter, driving to a first down at the Oberlin 26, but on third-and-10, Sir Louis' pass was picked off by Cody Hartley at the Oberlin 6-yard line.

The last play of the quarter proved to be pivotal when Oberlin's Ray Cummerlander fumbled at his own 20-yard line, and after a lengthy scrum, sophomore linebacker Chad Ellis (Dublin/Scioto) recovered for Ohio Wesleyan at the Oberlin 24.

Sir Louis picked up 2 yards on first down, then connected with freshman tight end Terrance Raeford (Brookline, Mass./Chesire Academy) for 13 yards and a first down at the Yeomen 9. On second down from the 8, senior split end Rick Rodgers (Medina/Parma) made a spectacular one-handed grab of Sir Louis' pass right in front of the goal post and put Ohio Wesleyan on the scoreboard.
Senior Jason Whitcomb (Wauseon) converted the PAT kick for a 7-0 Bishop lead.

Oberlin bounced back on its next possession, riding on the back of freshman running back R.V. Carroll and taking advantage of excellent field position. After an Ohio Wesleyan penalty, the Yeomen started on the Bishop 49-yard line. Carroll picked up 6 yards on his first touch of the game, then broke loose for 16 yards and a first down. On second-and-5 from the Ohio Wesleyan 22, Carroll took a shovel pass from quarterback Andy Stein down to the 8-yard line, but the Bishop defense stiffened there. Mike Tomlinson came on for a 23-yard field goal try and the kick was good to bring the Yeomen within 7-3.

The Yeomen forced a 3-and-out on Ohio Wesleyan's next possession, and Andy Mangan broke loose on a 24-yard punt return, giving Oberlin the ball at the Bishop 34-yard line midway through the second quarter.

Stein went deep on first down, but his pass was picked off by junior cornerback Tom Thome (Macedonia/Nordonia) at the Ohio Wesleyan 4-yard line.

On first down, Sir Louis found Raeford over the middle, and Raeford almost shook the tackle of Oberlin's Cody Hartley for what would have been a 96-yard scoring play. Hartley, however, was able to make the play and bring Raeford down at the Ohio Wesleyan 49-yard line. Sir Louis and Raeford connected once more for a first down, this time on fourth-and-5 from the Oberlin 29, and then Sir Louis found Carducci for 9 yards on third-and-8 from the Yeomen 20. The Bishop drive stalled at the Oberlin 4-yard line, and Whitcomb came on for a 22-yard field goal that gave Ohio Wesleyan a 10-3 lead.

The Bishops got the ball to open the second half and assembled another long drive with the aid of a pair of timely Oberlin penalties. On fourth-and-3 from the Ohio Wesleyan 35, Oberlin was penalized 5 yards for having 12 men on the field, giving the Bishops a first down, and on the next play, junior halfback Nick Rice (Dublin/Scioto) broke free for 28 yards, although an Ohio Wesleyan personal foul moved the ball back to the Oberlin 47. Rice picked up 18 more yards for another first down, then gained 5 more on second-and-3 for a first down at the Oberlin 16. The Bishops got to the 9-yard line and freshman Chris Kras (Aurora) came on for a 26-yard field goal try, which went wide left. Oberlin, however, was offside on the play, giving Ohio Wesleyan a first down at the Yeomen 4. A holding penalty moved the ball back to the Oberlin 14, and on first down, Carducci weaved his way through the Oberlin defense and into the end zone to give the Bishops a 17-3 lead.

Carroll set up another Oberlin field goal later in the quarter, breaking free on a 59-yard run that gave the Yeomen a first down on the Ohio Wesleyan 21. Tomlinson's 35-yard kick into the wind was perfect, bringing the Yeomen within 17-6 with :56 left in the third quarter.

The Bishops answered quickly with a drive that would put the game out of reach. Rice made one big play on the possession, connecting with
freshman halfback Calvin Willis (Hanford, Calif./West) for 32 yards on a halfback option play. After an Oberlin pass interference penalty, Sir Louis connected with Raeford down the right sideline. Raeford lost the ball at the Oberlin 4-yard line but covered it in the end zone for a touchdown that increased the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 23-6, with Whitcomb's PAT making it a 24-6 game.

Oberlin drove for a touchdown in the closing minutes, with Stein scrambing for gains of 15 and 24 yards -- the former on fourth-and-12 -- then picking up 12 more yards on an option play. Stein scrambled for another first down, gaining 11 yards on fourth-and-2 from the Bishop 22, and Carroll took it from there, finishing off the drive with an 11-yard TD run with :55 left in the game.

Rice led the Bishops with 134 yards on 15 carries, while Carducci finished with 37 yards in 10 attempts.

Sir Louis completed 10 of 20 passes for 152 yards and 2 touchdowns, with Raeford making 4 catches for 91 yards. Willis caught 3 passes for 46 yards and Rice had 3 catches for 32 yards.

Junior end Owen Case (Marion/River Valley) led the Bishops with 9 tackles, including a sack and 2 for loss, and intercepted a pass. Senior safety Jeff King (Sidney/Piqua) had 8 stops, including 1 for loss; and senior tackle Steve Greene (Mansfield/Senior) collected 6 tackles, including 1 1/2 for loss. Sophomore linebacker Chad Ellis (Dublin/Scioto) added 4 tackles, including 1 for loss.

For Oberlin, Carroll led the way with 93 yards on 6 rushes, while Stein finished with 86 yards on 12 carries and completed 11 of 27 passes for 60 yards. Carroll led Yeomen receivers with 3 catches for 11 yards. Mike Loll made 2 catches for 20 yards and Cassius Harris had 2 catches for 19 yards.

R.J. Parker led the Yeomen defense with 12 tackles, while Andy Estep had 11 stops, including 1 for loss; and Clayton Thurmer made 10 tackles.
