Wittenberg 77, Ohio Wesleyan 60

Senior wing Bryan King (Sidney) and senior guard Ross Rybarczyk (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic) hit 3-pointers that gave Ohio Wesleyan an early 6-5 lead, but Wittenberg answered with a 16-2 run and shot 72 percent from the field during the first half on the way to a North Coast Athletic Conference win over the Bishops on Wednesday in Springfield.

King's 3-pointer on Ohio Wesleyan's first possession of the game gave the Bishops a 3-2 lead, and after Dane Borchers converted a 3-point play for Wittenberg, Rybarczyk's 3-pointer gave Ohio Wesleyan a 6-5 lead with 17:53 left in the first half.

Pat Denbow answered with a 3-pointer for Wittenberg and Daniel Russ followed with a pair of hoops for a 12-6 Tiger lead.

Sophomore post Jesse Jean (Alexandria, Va./Hyde (Conn.) School) scored to end the Bishop drought, but the Tigers answered with a 3-pointer by Tyler Howard and a pair of long bombs by Billy Bowen to stretch the lead to 21-8 with 13:12 left in the first half.

Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 28-18 as freshman wing Kyle Holliday (Van Wert) and junior guard Matt Shirer (Medina) connected from downtown, but that was as close as the Bishops would come.

Jean led the Bishops with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Shirer finished with 11 points and senior wing Andy Warnock (Delaware/Hayes) scored 10 points. Holliday, junior post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) and sophomore post Dustin Rudegeair (Yellow Springs) shared the team lead with 2 assists apiece.

Borchers and Russ shared the Wittenberg lead with 13 points apiece, while Denbow scored 11 points and Kenny Brady finished with 10. Jack Hemenway had a team-high 6 rebounds and Phil Steffes led the Tigers with 5 assists.
