Wooster 103, Ohio Wesleyan 94

Jan. 21, 2006

Freshman guard Tim Patten (Mechanicsburg) hit three 3-pointers to help Ohio Wesleyan erase a 9-point first-half deficit and take the lead, but Wooster bounced back with a 12-2 run to take the lead for good and went on to win a North Coast Athletic Conference contest on Saturday in Wooster.

Senior wing Bryan King (Sidney) buried a 3-pointer to tie the game at 10-10 early on, but Wooster answered with a pair of buckets by James Cooper and another by Kyle Witucky for a 16-10 lead. Wooster stretched its lead to 22-13 on Brandon Johnson's fast-break lay-in with 11:40 left in the first half, and still led by a 24-15 count on Jeff Stevens' jumper with 11:12 to play.

The Bishops then got back-to-back 3-pointers by Patten and a lay-in by freshman wing Kyle Holliday (Van Wert) in a span of less than a minute to close to within 24-23 with 10:14 to go in the half. Devin Fulk hit a 3-pointer for Wooster to end the Bishop spurt, but Patten hit another long-range bomb and junior post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) followed with a basket for a 28-27 Bishop lead with 8:10 left in the half.

Witucky answered with a 3-pointer for Wooster, and after a Cooper free throw, Cooper converted a 3-point play to give the Fighting Scots a 34-28 lead.

King hit a jumper for Ohio Wesleyan, but Cooper came back with a jumper and a 3-pointer to stretch the Wooster lead to 39-30 with 5:00 left in the half.

Wooster led by a count of 52-42 at halftime and was ahead by as many as 17 points during the second half, taking a 68-51 lead on back-to-back Cooper lay-ins.

Ohio Wesleyan rallied down the stretch, closing to within 91-84 with 4:24 remaining as senior wing Andy Warnock (Delaware/Hayes) canned a jumper and a 3-pointer. Another Warnock 3-pointer brought the Bishops within 97-89 with 2:42 to go, but that was as close as Ohio Wesleyan would come.

Warnock led the Bishops with 15 points, while Patten finished with 14, Chojnacki and sophomore post Jesse Jean (Alexandria, Va./Hyde (Conn.) School) had 13 apiece and sophomore post Dustin Rudegeair (Yellow Springs) finished with 10. Jean led the Bishops with 7 rebounds and junior guard Matt Shirer (Medina) had a team-high 6 assists.

Cooper led Wooster with 37 points and 5 assists, Tim Vandevaart had 15 points and Witucky finished with 11 points. Evan Will led the Fighting Scots with 9 rebounds and Marty Bidwell shared the team lead with 5 assists
.

Wooster's 103 points marked the first time the Bishops had allowed 100 or more points in a game since Nov. 25, 2003, when Division I entity Eastern Kentucky scored 106 points. The last time Ohio Wesleyan allowed 100 points to a Division III team was Nov. 21, 1993, when Geneseo State scored 102 points in the championship game of Ohio Wesleyan's Kiwanis Tournament.
