Ohio Wesleyan 121, Hiram 70

Jan. 28, 2006

[ Andy Warnock ]Senior wing Andy Warnock (Delaware/Hayes) had 6 points and senior guard Ross Rybarczyk (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic) added 5 as Ohio Wesleyan raced to a 17-0 lead and never looked back on the way to a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Hiram on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Warnock opened the scoring with a 3-pointer on the first possession of the game, and Rybarczyk followed suit with a 3-pointer on the Bishops' second possession. Rybarczyk added a drive and lay-in for an 8-0 lead just over 2 minutes into the game.

Warnock added another 3-pointer, sophomore post Dustin Rudegeair (Yellow Springs) canned a jumper, then sophomore post Jesse Jean (Alexandria, Va./Hyde (Conn.) School) sank a pair of free throws and added a lay-in, the latter stretching the Bishop lead to 17-0 with 14:02 left in the first half.

Hiram got on the scoreboard on Michael McDevitt's third-chance lay-in with 11:45 left in the half, but junior guard Matt Shirer (Medina) drilled a 3-pointer for a 20-2 Bishop lead. Hiram's Brandon Pool then hit the second of 2 free throws, with Shirer responding with another 3-pointer that made it 23-3 with 10:47 left in the half.

The Terriers closed to within 25-7 on a pair of A.J. White free throws, but the Bishops scored the next 16 points to put the game out of reach. Warnock hit a pair of 3-pointers and a lay-in to start off the run, then senior wing Bryan King (Sidney) and Rybarczyk added 3 pointers, and junior post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) hit a pair of free throws to cap the run.

The Bishops went on to lead 57-28 at the intermission, and pulled away in the second half.

Freshman wing Kyle Holliday (Van Wert) led the Bishops with season bests of 20 points and 9 rebounds. Warnock finished with 18 points, Shirer had 15 points and Jean added 13 points. Rybarczyk led the Bishops with 8 assists.

Ohio Wesleyan's 121 points tied the school home-court and Branch Rickey Arena record, set against Oberlin on Jan. 23, 1988, and tied against Oberlin on Jan. 14, 1989. The Bishops' 16 3-point field goals also set a Branch Rickey Arena record, eclipsing the mark of 15 set by Ohio Wesleyan against Denison on Jan. 31, 2001.

Brandon Pool led the Terriers with 16 points, while Emeka Mbanefo added 11 points. McDevitt led Hiram with 7 rebounds and White had a team-high 4 assists.
