Ohio Wesleyan 71, Wabash 68

Feb. 1, 2006

Junior post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) scored to put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay and sophomore post Dustin Rudegeair (Yellow Springs) added a free throw for the final margin as Ohio Wesleyan edged Wabash in North Coast Athletic Conference play on Wednesday in Crawfordsville, Ind.

With the Bishops trailing, 68-66, Chojnacki hit a lay-in to even the game at 68-68 lead with 1:05 remaining.

On the other end of the court, Chojnacki stole the ball from Wabash's Kyle Coffey, and after senior wing Andy Warnock (Delaware/Hayes) missed a lay-in, Chojnacki got the rebound and scored on the putback to give Ohio Wesleyan a 70-68 lead with :28 to play.

Wabash again turned to Coffey inside, but he missed a lay-in with :07 to play and Rudegeair cleared the rebound. Rudegeair was fouled and hit the second of 2 free throws for a 71-68 Bishop lead, and Kyle Medeiros' game-tying 3-point try just before the buzzer was off the mark.

Ohio Wesleyan took an early 6-0 lead on 3-pointers by Warnock and senior wing Bryan King (Sidney), but the Little Giants came back with 7 straight points on a lay-in by Gary Simkus and a bucket and a 3-pointer by Mederios.

The Little Giants would lead by as many as 5 points, when Caleb Lyttle's lay-in made it 31-26 with 5:58 left in the first half.

The Bishops came back with a 13-4 run that included a 3-point play by sophomore post Jesse Jean (Alexandria, Va./Hyde (Conn.) School), 3-pointers by Warnock and Rudegeair, and was capped by a pair of free throws from senior guard Ross Rybarczyk (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic) that gave Ohio Wesleyan a 39-35 lead with :13 left.

Wabash closed to within 35-34 when Medeiros hit a 3-pointer at the first-half buzzer, setting the stage for a closely-played second half.

Each team held a 5-point lead during the second stanza, with the Bishops scoring the first 4 points of the period to take a 40-34 edge and Wabash rallying later for a 54-49 advantage.

Wabash still led by 4 points when Michael Woods' lay-in made it 62-58 with 7:09 remaining, only to see Ohio Wesleyan rally to tie the game at 64-64 on a 3-point play by junior wing Ted Uritus (Columbus/Bishop Watterson) with 4:22 to go.

Medeiros' jumper gave Wabash a 66-64 lead with 3:50 left, but the Bishops tied the game on Rudegeair's free throws with 2:01 remaining. Adonis Joseph then scored for a 68-66 Little Giant lead, setting up the final 90 seconds.

Warnock led the Bishops with 15 points, while Rudegeair had 14 points and a team-high 8 rebounds. Rybarczyk led Ohio Wesleyan with 4 assists.

Medeiros topped the Little Giants with 14 points, and his 5 rebounds shared the team lead. Simkus and Joseph each scored 12 points and Andrew Zimmer had 11 points and shared the team lead with 5 rebounds
