Ohio Wesleyan 77, Allegheny 67

Feb. 4, 2006

Sophomore guard Casey Teeters (Westerville/Columbus St. Charles) drilled a 3-pointer to put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay in a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Allegheny on Saturday in Meadville, Pa.

With the score tied at 47-47 with 12 minutes left in regulation time, Teeters drilled a 3-pointer for a 50-47 Bishop lead. Allegheny came back with a pair of free throws by Matt Majzlik to come within 50-49, but Teeters and junior post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) combined to score the next 8 points. Chojnacki hit a jumper and Teeters scored on a putback to make it 54-49. Chojnacki followed with a lay-in, then Teeters hit another lay-in to stretch the margin to 58-49 with 8:06 left in regulation time.

The Gators closed to within 62-58 on a 3-pointer by Bill Babe with 5:16 to go, but Chojnacki answered with a 3-point play and junior guard Matt Shirer (Medina) followed with a jumper to give the Bishops a 9-point lead.

Allegheny rallied once more, again coming within 4 points at 67-63 on Babe's free throw with 2:32 left, but once again Ohio Wesleyan had a response, with Chojnacki tipping in his own miss, senior guard Ross Rybarczyk (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic) adding a bucket and sophomore post Dustin Rudegeair (Yellow Springs) sinking a pair of free throws for a 73-63 Ohio Wesleyan lead with :24 to go.

Ohio Wesleyan took an early 13-9 lead on a basket by freshman wing Kyle Holliday (Van Wert), then stretched the lead to 5 points on a 3-pointer by Holliday and to 6 points on a 3-pointer by Shirer that made it 21-15 midway through the first half.

Allegheny bounced back to take a 26-25 lead on a 3-pointer by Brad Witucki and a pair of free throws by Ryan Holilihan, and the Gators went on to increase their lead to 31-27 on Babe's 3-point play with 3:20 left in the half.

The Gators stretched their lead to 43-37 on Majzlik's lay-in early in the second half, only to see the Bishops roar back to tie the game with an 8-2 spurt that included a 3-point play and a 3-pointer by Chojnacki.

Chojnacki led the Bishops with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Shirer finished with 16 points and Rudegeair scored 11 points, going 4-for-4 from the field and 2-for-2 from the line. Rybarczyk led the Bishops with 5 assists.
