wing Andy Warnock (Delaware/Hayes) scored 13 points, sophomore post Dustin
Rudegeair (Yellow Springs) had 12 points and junior
post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) added
10 points during the first half as Ohio Wesleyan raced to a 65-34 halftime
lead and went on to defeat Allegheny in quarterfinal action of the North
Coast Athletic Conference tournament on Tuesday at Branch Rickey Arena.
Ohio Wesleyan advances to the NCAC tournament semifinals to face Wittenberg
on Friday at Wooster, with Wooster to take on Earlham in the other semifinal.
Game times for Friday's semifinals will be announced on Wednesday.
The Bishops went on an early 10-2 run, with Warnock contributing a bucket
and a 3-pointer, to take a 10-4 lead less than 4 minutes into the game
Allegheny answered with a 3-pointer by Bill Babe to close within 10-7,
but Ohio Wesleyan scored the next 12 points in a span of 99 seconds.
Senior wing Bryan King (Sidney) started the run with a 3-pointer, then
senior guard Ross Rybarczyk (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic) and sophomore post
Jesse Jean (Alexandria, Va./Hyde (Conn.) School) added lay-ins before
Chojnacki contributed a lay-in and a 3-pointer to give the Bishops a 19-7
lead with 13:34 left in the half.
Ohio Wesleyan still led, 26-13, with 11:45 to play when the Bishops went
on a 21-4 spurt that started with 3-pointers by Warnock, freshman guard
Tim Patten (Mechanicsburg), junior wing Ted Uritus (Columbus/Bishop Watterson)
and freshman wing Kyle Holliday (Van Wert). Uritus added another 3-pointer,
Rudegeair sank a jumper and junior guard Matt Shirer (Medina) hit a fast-break
lay-in and a pair of free throws to stretch the margin to 47-17 with 6:49
left in the period.
The Bishops would led by as many as 36 points before taking a 65-34 lead
into the locker room.
Ohio Wesleyan went 24-for-35 from the field during the first half, a shooting
percentage of .686. That included figures of 12-for-21 (.571) from 3-point
range.
Allegheny scored the first 5 points of the second half, getting a lay-in
from Matt Majzlik and a 3-pointer by Babe, but the Gators would not come
closer than 25 points during the remainder of the contest.
Warnock led the Bishops with 18 points, while Rudegeair had 16 and Chojnacki
finished with 12 points and a team-high 6 rebounds. Rybarczyk led the
Bishops with 6 assists.
Ohio Wesleyan hit 17 three-pointers in the game, breaking the Branch Rickey
Arena record of 16 set against Hiram earlier this season.
Babe led Allegheny with 16 points and shared the team lead with 5 rebounds,

Torsney had 13 points and Jimmy Savage added 11 points and shared the
team lead with 5 rebounds. Torsney and Mike Sefscik shared the Gator lead
with 3 assists apiece.
