Haverford 78, Ohio Wesleyan 66

Nov. 18, 2005

David Nowacki hit a basket and Raymond Brown converted a 3-point play during a 7-0 run that put Haverford ahead to stay in the first round of the Equinox Classic on Friday at Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, Pa.

Ohio Wesleyan had taken an early lead, storming back from a 4-0 deficit with a basket by senior guard Ross Rybarczyk (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic), a pair of free throws by junior post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) and a bucket by sophomore post Jesse Jean (Alexandria, Va./Hyde (Conn.) School) to lead, 6-4.

The Fords came back to take a 10-9 lead on Nowacki's lay-in with 15:19 left in the first half, only to see the Bishops reel off another 6 straight points on a pair of baskets by junior wing Matt Shirer (Medina) sandwiched around a pair of free throws by sophomore post Dustin Rudegeair (Yellow Springs).

Haverford rallied to tie the game at 18-18 on Nowacki's free throw, then took a 20-18 lead on a Nowacki bucket and added Brown's 3-point play and a basket by Jason Polykoff for a 25-18 lead with 7:24 left in the first half.

The Bishops tied the game at 26-26 on a bucket by sophomore post Ryan Rozak (Fairview Park/Fairview) with 2:42 left in the half, and still trailed by a point at 29-28 on a lay-in by senior wing Andy Warnock (Delaware/Hayes) with :37 to play, but Polykoff answered with a jumper to give the Fords a 31-28 halftime lead.

Haverford stretched its lead to 38-30 just 2 minutes into the second half on a 3-pointer by John Elefterakis, and when the Bishops came within 42-36 on Jean's lay-in with 14:53 to go, the Fords got some breathing room with a 10-0 run that featured a 3-pointer and a basket by Polykoff.

The Fords led by as many as 17 points, but Ohio Wesleyan battled back in the closing minutes, slicing the deficit to 9 points on a 3-pointer by sophomore wing Brian Cafarella (Westerville/North) that made it a 71-62 game with 2:54 to play. From that points, however, Haverford was able to seal the game at the line.

Chojnacki led the Bishops with 16 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Jean snared a team-high 10 boards for the Bishops, while Rybarczyk led the Bishops with 3 assists.

Polykoff led the Fords with 19 points and 4 assists, Elefterakis followed with 16 points, Brown ended up with 14 points and Mike Fratangelo had 13 points and a team-high 8 rebounds
