Ohio Wesleyan 91, Swarthmore 68

Sophomore post Dustin Rudegeair (Yellow Springs) hit a basket that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay and junior post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) scored 5 straight points to highlight a second-half 8-0 run that broke open a win in the second round of the Equinox Classic on Saturday at Haverford College in Haverford, Pa.

Ohio Wesleyan had taken a 17-16 lead on a bucket by sophomore post Jesse Jean (Alexandria, Va./Hyde (Conn.) School) with 13:42 left in the first half before the Garnet scored 7 straight points, getting a basket and 2 free throws by Jon Tundel and a 3-pointer by Chris Nana-Sinkam for a 23-17 lead with 11:37 to play.

The Bishops chipped away, closing to within 38-36 on a free throw by sophomore post Dustin Rudegeair (Yellow Springs) to end the first half and then tying the game on a basket by Chojnacki on the first possession of the second half.

Rudegeair hit a basket that gave the Bishops the lead for good at 45-44 with 17:30 left in regulation time, and followed with buckets on Ohio Wesleyan's next 2 possessions for a 49-44 Bishop lead.

The Garnet closed to within a single point at 51-50 on Ian McCormick's bucket with 13:09 left, but Ohio Wesleyan answered with a free throw and a jumper by Jean and a bucket and 2 free throws by junior wing Ted Uritus (Columbus/Bishop Watterson) for a 58-50 margin with 10:30 to play.

Ohio Wesleyan put the game out of reach with an 8-0 spurt that featured 5 straight points by Chojnacki. After Chojnacki hit a basket, he went to the line for 2 free throws and made the first but missed the second. Chojnacki wound up with the rebound of the missed charity toss and was fouled again, and this time sank both free throws to stretch the Bishop lead to 82-63.

Chojnacki led the Bishops with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Rudegeair finished with 12 points and Warnock added 11 points. Senior guard Ross Rybarczyk (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic) led Ohio Wesleyan with 4 assists.

McCormick led Swarthmore with 22 points, Steve Wolf added 15 points and a team-high 7 rebounds and Chris Casey led the Garnet with 4 assists.
