Ohio
Wesleyan 70, Washington & Jefferson 67
Nov.
22, 2005
Junior guard Matt Shirer (Medina) hit a 3-pointer to break
a 67-67 tie and Ohio Wesleyan withstood a barrage of potential game-tying
3-point shots to take a non-conference win over Washington & Jefferson
on Tuesday in Washington, Pa.
Ohio Wesleyan had taken a 67-62 lead on 4 consecutive free throws by senior
guard Ross Rybarczyk (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic), the latter pair coming
with 2:10 to play.
The Presidents closed to within 67-64 on Jon Koch's lay-in with 1:54 remaining,
and Koch later tied the game at 67-67 by converting a 3-point play with
:45 to go.
Shirer's go-ahead 3-pointer came with :30 on the clock, and while W&J
was able to get off 3-point shots by Brandon Studer, Tyler Trutza and
Josip Lucic-Jozak during the frantic final 12 seconds of regulation time,
none of them found the mark and junior wing Ted Uritus (Columbus/Bishop
Watterson) sealed the game with a defensive rebound at the buzzer.
Ohio Wesleyan had taken an early 5-3 lead on a bucket by junior post Ben
Chojnacki (Medina), but the Presidents answered with a 13-2 spree that
included 6 points by Lucic-Jozak for a 16-7 lead.
Washington & Jefferson still led by 9 points at 24-15 when Ohio Wesleyan
reeled off 9 straight points to tie the game. Senior guard Bryan King
(Sidney) and sophomore post Dustin Rudegeair (Yellow Springs) buried 3-pointers
and senior wing Andy Warnock (Delaware/Hayes) converted a 3-point play
to bring the Bishops back.
Warnock and King hit 3-pointers to open the second half and give the Bishops
a 38-30 lead, and Ohio Wesleyan eventually opened up a 10-point lead when
a lay-in by sophomore post Jesse Jean (Alexandria, Va./Hyde (Conn.) School)
made it 46-36 with 14:07 to go.
The Presidents came back to tie the game at 56-56 on Koch's jumper with
7:45 remaining, then tied it one last time at 67-67.
Chojnacki led the Bishops with 16 points and 4 assists, while Warnock
finished with 14 points and Shirer added 13 points. Jean
grabbed a team-high 7 rebounds.
Koch led Washington & Jefferson with 37 points and 12 rebounds. Lucic-Jozak
added 18 points and Matt Vorndran scored 10 points. Trutza led the Presidents
with 4 assists.
