Sophomore wing Brian Cafarella (Westerville/North) scored 8
straight points to cap a 15-0 first-half run that gave the Bishops the
lead, but Robert Morris rallied to tie the game early in the second half
and went on to defeat Ohio Wesleyan in the championship game of Hanover's
John R. Collier Tournament on Sunday in Hanover, Ind.
The Bishops took an early 10-5 lead on a 3-pointer by junior post Ben
Chojnacki (Medina) less than 2 minutes into the game and still led, 12-8,
on Chojnacki's lay-in with 16:55 left in the first half.
Robert Morris, ranked fourth in the NAIA national poll, scored the next
9 points, with Reggie George starting the run off with a dunk, Freeman
Taylor scoring a pair of buckets and Jerome Harper sinking a 3-pointer
to give the Eagles a 17-12 lead.
Ohio Wesleyan answered with a pair of jumpers by sophomore post Jesse
Jean (Alexandria, Va./Hyde (Conn.) School, a 3-point play by freshman
wing Kyle Holliday (Van Wert) and Cafarella's 8 straight points to take
a 27-17 lead with 11:38 left in the first half.
The Bishops still led, 48-36, on a 3-pointer by junior wing Ted Uritus
(Columbus/Bishop Watterson) with 1:45 left in the first half, but Robert
Morris finished off the half with a 9-0 burst that included a 3-pointer
by James Parker and 2 baskets by George. The Eagles then took the lead
by opening the second half with a pair of baskets by Taylor for a 49-48
advantage less than 2 minutes into the period.
Chojnacki hit a pair of baskets to tie the game at 52-52 with 17:24 remaining,
but Harper sank a pair of 3-pointers to put the Eagles ahead to stay.
Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 60-56 on Jean's lay-in with 12:42 left,
but Robert Morris broke the game open with a 17-2 run that featured 2
more 3-pointers by Parker.
Chojnacki led the Bishops with 18 points. Holliday finished with a season-high
14, Jean added 13 and Cafarella finished with 10. Holliday led the Bishops
with 6 rebounds and junior guard Matt Shirer (Medina) and senior guard
Ross Rybarczyk (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic) shared the team lead with 5 assists
apiece.
Taylor led Robert Morris with 19 points and 8 rebounds. Harper scored
16 points and dished out a team-high 7 assists, Anthony Smith scored 15
points and George added 13 points.
Chojnacki represented the Bishops on the all-tournament team.
