Ohio
Wesleyan 64, Capital 57
Nov.
30, 2005
Senior
guard Bryan King (Sidney) buried back-to-back 3-pointers to put Ohio Wesleyan
ahead to stay and the Bishops put the game away at the free throw line
in taking a non-conference win over Capital on Wednesday at Branch Rickey
Arena.
After Capital had erased a 7-point second-half deficit to tie the game
at 52-52, Capital's Matty Owens had given the Crusaders a 53-52 lead by
hitting the second of 2 free throws with 3:43 left in regulation time.
On the Bishops' next possession, King drilled a 3-pointer for a 55-53
Ohio Wesleyan lead, and after a Capital turnover, King buried another
3-pointer for a 58-53 margin with 2:58 to go.
Sophomore post Dustin Rudegeair (Yellow Springs) followed with a pair
of free throws to restore the 7-point margin with 1:34 remaining, but
Capital's Steve Kyser scored to bring the Crusaders within 60-55.
Senior guard Ross Rybarczyk (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic) and senior wing
Andy Warnock (Delaware/Hayes) hit free throws to once again make it a
7-point game, and after Capital's Brian Alge scored to make it a 62-57
contest with :14 to play, King and junior wing Ted Uritus (Columbus/Bishop
Watterson) sank free throws to account for the final margin.
Ohio Wesleyan led by as many as 9 points during the first half, using
a 14-4 run to turn a 15-14 Capital lead into a 28-19 Bishop advantage.
Rudegeair and King hit 3-pointers and sophomore post Jesse Jean (Alexandria,
Va./Hyde (Conn.) School) scored 6 points to highlight the Bishop run.
Kyser and David Johnson scored in the last minute of the first half to
bring Capital within 31-27 at the intermission, and the Crusaders closed
to within 31-29 on Nate Stahl's lay-in to open the second-half scoring.
Warnock hit a lay-in and junior post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) added a 3-pointer
as Ohio Wesleyan built a 38-31 lead 3 minutes into the second half, but
Capital rallied, getting 4 points from Johnson and a lay-in by Jake Meisler
that tied the game at 40-40 with 12:39 to go. From there, neither team
led by more than 4 points until King's back-to-back 3-pointers.
Rudegeair led the Bishops with 14 points and 7 rebounds, while King finished
with 10 points. Rybarczyk dished out a team-high 5 assists.
Kyser led Capital with 15 points and Johnson had 10 points. Stahl, Owens
and Meisler shared the team lead with 5 rebounds apiece and Johnson led
the Crusaders with 3 assists.
