Ohio Wesleyan 76, Allegheny 61

Dec. 10, 2005

[ Ben Chojnacki ]Junior post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) scored 6 straight points during the first half to help Ohio Wesleyan build a lead, and sophomore wing Brian Cafarella (Westerville/North) hit back-to-back 3-pointers in the second half to hold off an Allegheny rally as the Bishops topped the Gators in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.

The first 9 minutes of the game were tightly contested, with neither team leading by more than 4 points. When sophomore post Dustin Rudegeair (Yellow Springs) connected on a 3-pointer for a 23-18 lead with 11:11 left in the period, it marked the biggest lead in the game to that point. That 5-point margin was short-lived, however, as Allegheny's Brad Witucki answered with a 3-pointer on the Gators' next possession to make it a 23-21 game.

Chojnacki hit 2 free throws, a lay-in and a jumper, and when senior wing Andy Warnock (Delaware/Hayes) sank a fast break lay-in, the Bishops had reeled off 8 straight points to take a 31-21 lead with 6:53 left in the first half.

Matt Majzlik came back with an offensive rebound bucket for the Gators, but Warnock buried a 3-pointer to give Ohio Wesleyan a 34-23 lead with 5:52 to go.

The Bishops still led, 49-38, about 5 minutes into the second half when Allegheny rallied. Ryan Hollihan scored inside, then converted a 3-point play, and scored another basket. Majzlik followed with a jumper to bring the Gators within 51-47 with 11:03 remaining.

Warnock answered with a 3-pointer to end the Bishop drought, and Ohio Wesleyan still led by a 57-50 count when Cafarella drained a 3-pointer with 6:48 remaining. Jimmy Savage scored for the Gators, but Cafarella hit another 3-pointer to make it 63-52 with 6:04 remaining.

Allegheny closed to within 65-58 on Ben Torsney's lay-in with 4:13 remaining, but the Bishops iced the game with 9 straight points. Rudegeair hit a pair of free throws, Warnock hit a lay-in and a pair of free throws, and senior wing Bryan King (Sidney) capped the run with a 3-pointer for a 74-58 lead with 1:52 to play.

Warnock led the Bishops with 19 points, while Rudegeair finished with 16 and Chojnacki scored 14 and led Ohio Wesleyan with 9 rebounds. Senior guard Ross Rybarczyk (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic) led the Bishops with 8 assists.

Majzlik and Hollihan shared the Allegheny lead with 18 points apiece. Hollihan led the Gators with 9 boards and Casey McCloskey had a team-high 8 assists
