Wilmington 70, Ohio Wesleyan 55

Sophomore wing Brian Cafarella (Westerville/North) hit a 3-pointer to pull Ohio Wesleyan into a 30-30 halftime tie, but Wilmington opened the second half with a 14-5 run and went on to defeat the Bishops in non-conference play on Wednesday in Wilmington.

Senior guard Bryan King (Sidney) hit a 3-pointer and sophomore post Dustin Rudegeair (Yellow Springs) added a basket as the Bishops raced to a 5-1 lead just over a minute into the game. Ohio Wesleyan broke an 11-11 tie with 5 straight points by Cafarella, only to see the Quakers score 5 straight points to even the game once more.

Later, junior post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) gave the Bishops a 22-21 lead with a bucket with 6:53 left in the first half, but Wilmington responded with 9 straight points to post the biggest lead of the half. Travante Leftenant opened the Quaker run with a basket, Fred Harrison followed with a jumper, Josh Rohrbacher hit a 3-pointer and Justin Gaines hit a jumper in the lane with 3:48 left in the half for a 30-22 Wilmington lead.

Ohio Wesleyan answered with 8 straight points to finish the half, getting a 3-pointer from junior guard Matt Shirer (Medina), a lay-in by senior guard Ross Rybarczyk (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic) and Cafarella's 3-pointer for a 30-30 count at the intermission.

Rohrbacher opened the second half with a pair of free throws for Wilmington, then Eric Stirling and Zach Broermann added baskets for a 36-30 Quaker lead. Rudegeair and Nick Berger then traded baskets, then King buried a 3-pointer to bring the Bishops within 38-35 before Brett Carpenter and Broermann hit 3-pointers to stretch the margin to 44-35.

The Bishops came within 46-40 on a pair of Shirer free throws with 12:14 to play, but Wilmington broke the game open with a 10-1 run, with Stirling and Rohrbacher contributing 5 points apiece, to take a 56-41 lead with 7:42 to go, and the Quaker lead would remain in double figures for the remainder of the game.

Rudegeair led the Bishops with 14 points and 6 rebounds, while Cafarella finished with 10 points. Rybarczyk dished out a team-high 3 assists.

Stirling led Wilmington with 25 points and 6 rebounds. Rohrbacher added 12 points and Broermann had 4 assists
