Wesleyan 11, Whittier 10
attacker Karl Zimmerman (Utica, Mich./Brother Rice) scored the game-winning
goal with 2:29 left in regulation time to lift Ohio Wesleyan over Whittier
in non-conference action on Thursday at Liberty High School in Powell.
Zimmerman scored off a pass from senior attacker Jarred Law (Littleton,
Colo./Arapahoe) to break a 10-10 tie and give the Bishops the lead for
Whittier had rallied from a 10-7 deficit in the fourth quarter, tying
the game on goals by Dave Gerbarg, Matt Mulry and Conner Schryver, setting
the stage for Zimmerman's score.
After the teams battled to a 4-4 tie at halftime, the Bishops outscored
the Poets 4-1 in the third quarter, getting a pair of goals from sophomore
midfielder Chris Eccles (Secane, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) and single scores
from freshman midfielder Phillip Johnson (Dallas, Texas/Jesuit) and sophomore
midfielder Nick Gallagher (Columbus/Dublin Scioto).
Gallagher added another score early in the fourth quarter to give Ohio
Wesleyan a 9-5 lead.
Whittier closed to within 9-7 on scores by David Denniston and Peter Hinton,
the latter with 10:25 left in regulation time.
The Bishops answered with a goal by junior attacker John Kingston (Huntington,
N.Y.) with 8:37 remaining, setting up the final few minutes of action.
Gallagher led the Bishops with 4 goals, while Eccles finished with 2 goals
and 4 assists.
Sophomore Ryan Perone (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) had 12 saves for
Gerbarg led the Poets with 4 goals, and Hinton finished with 2 goals.
Ben Brown stopped 9 shots in the Whitter goal.
