Ohio
Wesleyan 14, Wooster 13
April
16, 2006
Sophomore
midfielder Chris Eccles (Secane, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) scored with :01
left in the first overtime period to lift Ohio Wesleyan over Wooster in
North Coast Athletic Conference action on Sunday at Selby Field.
The Bishops had possession of the ball through most of the overtime period,
launching 4 shots during the extra session, but Wooster goalkeeper Matt
Beister made a pair of saves to preserve the tie.
After the second of Beister's saves, Ohio Wesleyan was whistled for stepping
in the crease during the chase for the loose ball, but the Bishops got
the ball back with 1:27 left when Wooster was unable to clear.
Eccles sent a shot over the goal with :13 to play, but Ohio Wesleyan retained
possession, and with time running down, Eccles wound up and found the
back of the net to end the game.
The Bishops sent the game into overtime with a 2-man up goal by freshman
attacker Karl Zimmerman (Utica, Mich./Brother Rice) with 3:36 left in
regulation time. Wooster had a man-up situtation but was called for tripping
on an Ohio Wesleyan clear attempt. When the Bishop penalty released, the
Wooster player in the box also ran on to the field, and the Scots were
penalized for having too many men on the field.
Ohio Wesleyan had broken a 4-4 tie when Zimmerman and sophomore midfielder
Nick Gallagher (Columbus/Dublin Scioto) scored goals 10 seconds apart,
giving the Bishops a 6-4 lead with 2:23 left in the first half.
Wooster answered quickly, getting a goal from freshman midfielder Tim
Lee (Orion, Mich./Detroit Jesuit) with 1:26 to play and a score by Mark
Weschler with 1:04 left in the half. Weschler scored again with :21 to
play, giving the Fighting Scots a 7-6 halftime lead.
Trailing, 8-6, early in the third quarter, the Bishops rallied with a
run of their own. Freshman attacker Eric Turner (Columbus/Dublin Scioto)
and sophomore midfielder Steve Fowler (Wilton, Conn.) scored to tie the
game, and senior attacker Jarred Law (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) added
a man-up goal less than a minute after Fowler's score to give Ohio Wesleyan
a 9-8 lead.
Wooster threatened to seize the momentum back when Chris Curran tied the
game at 9-9 with :27 left in the third quarter, but Eccles answered with
a goal with :04 to play, giving Ohio Wesleyan a 10-9 lead heading into
the final stanza.
Eccles added another goal in the first minute of the fourth quarter and
freshman midfielder Phillip Johnson (Dallas, Texas/Jesuit) followed with
a score to increase the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 12-9, but the Scots rallied
midway through the period, scoring 3 times in a span of 1:20 to tie the
game at 12-12, then taking a 13-12 lead on Weschler's goal with 6:03 left
in regulation time.
Eccles led the Bishops with 5 goals and 2 assists, while Johnson, Law
and Zimmerman each contributed 2 goals and an assist.
Hisham Hassan, whose goal tied the game at 12-12, led Wooster with 5 goals
and 2 assists, while Weschler finished with 3 goals and 2 assists.
Sophomore Ryan Perone (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) had 9 saves for
Ohio Wesleyan, while Biester finished with 11 saves for Wooster.
