Denison 10, Ohio Wesleyan 9

May 10, 2006

Ted Douglass scored the game-winning goal with 3:03 left in the first overtime period to lift Denison over Ohio Wesleyan in a first-round game of the NCAA Division III playoffs on Wednesday in Granville.

Denison advances to the second round of the NCAA tournament to face defending champion Salisbury at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

The Bishops trailed, 8-6, at the start of the fourth quarter but rallied to tie the game on a pair of goals by freshman midfielder Phillip Johnson (Dallas, Texas/Jesuit). Johnson's first goal came just over a minute into the period and the tying goal was with 10:26 on the clock.

Denison took a 9-8 lead on Teddy Epstein's goal with 9:30 left in regulation time, but Ohio Wesleyan answered right away, getting a score by freshman midfielder Dylan Brown (Devon, Pa./Episcopal Academy) just 12 seconds later to even the game at 9-9, and that was how regulation time would end as neither team could produce the game-winner through 9 minutes of tense action.

Ohio Wesleyan won the face-off to open the overtime period, but the Bishops lost the ball before they were able to get off a shot. Denison got possession and Douglass converted the Big Red's first shot of the extra session.

The Bishops had taken a 2-0 lead after the first quarter, recording goals by sophomore midfielder Nick Gallagher (Columbus/Dublin Scioto) and senior attacker Jarred Law (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe).

Denison closed to within 2-1 on Douglass' man-up goal with 8:48 left in the first half, but sophomore midfielder Chris Eccles (Secane, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) got that score back just 34 seconds later, then added another goal with 6:29 on the clock to give Ohio Wesleyan a 4-1 lead.

The Big Red tallied another man-up goal by Douglass, and once again Eccles answered, this time just 27 seconds later for a 5-2 Bishop lead.

Denison closed to within 5-4 at halftime on scores by Chris Boehl and P.J. Hendrick.

Eccles increased the Bishop lead to 6-4 with a goal in the first minute of the third quarter, but Denison reeled off the next 4 scores to take an 8-6 lead heading into the final stanza.

Eccles led the Bishops with 4 goals, while Johnson finished with 2 goals.

Sophomore Ryan Perone (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) had 8 saves in the Bishop goal.

Douglass led the Big Red with 4 goals, with Hendrick adding 2 goals and an assist.

Alex Baruch had 9 saves for Denison.
