Greensboro 2, Capital 1

Sept. 2, 2005

[ Damon Wilson ]Sophomore forward Damon Wilson (Mullica Hill, N.J./St. Andrews (Del.)) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal and senior midfielder Ryan Martin (Dublin/Wellington) contributed a goal and an assist as the Ohio Wesleyan men's soccer team opened its 2005 season with a win over Fredonia State in first-round action of the annual Fred Myers Invitational on Friday at Roy Rike Field.

Ohio Wesleyan advances to the tournament championship game to face Greensboro at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. The consolation game will pit Capital against Fredonia State at 5 p.m. on Saturday.

The Bishops took the lead in the ninth minute when Martin sent the ball into the box and senior forward Cole Graham (Zanesville) converted the chance to make it 1-0.

Ohio Wesleyan held the Blue Devils without a shot until the final minute of the half, but the Bishops were not able to add to their lead until midway through the second period.

The Bishops had earned a corner kick and junior midfielder Erik Ciccarelli (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) sent the ball toward the far post. Wilson got his head on the ball, and the ball appeared to glance off a Blue Devil defender and past Fredonia keeper Matt Borchard for a 2-0 Ohio Wesleyan lead.

Martin wrapped the Bishop scoring less than 3 minutes later, sending a pass from the middle out to junior midfielder Brandon Bianco (Powell/Olentangy) on the left side. Bianco sent the ball back to Martin, whose shot found the back of the net with 21:40 left in regulation time.

Fredonia State got on the scoreboard with 10:50 to play when Vincenzo Alfieri converted a penalty kick.

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Fredonia, 23-6. Sophomore Jamison Dague (Bexley) went the distance in the Bishop goal, making 4 saves. Borchard finished with 9 saves for Fredonia.

In Friday's opener,
Greensboro took a 2-0 lead and held on to defeat Capital.

The Pride took a 1-0 lead when Richard Engel headed home a crossing pass from Tony Falvino midway through the first half.

Geoff George gave Greensboro a 2-0 lead midway through the second half, winning a loose ball and weaving through a pair of Capital defenders before finding the back of the net.

Capital closed to within 2-1 with 15:20 left in regulation time when Joey Snyder converted a pass from Zach Porter, but the Crusaders were not able to manufacture the tying goal.

Matt Brown was credited with 10 saves for Greensboro, while John Snyder was credited with 9 saves in the Capital goal.
