Senior
first baseman Sarah Downs (Canton, Conn./Avon) went 5-for-6 and drove
in 4 runs to lead Ohio Wesleyan to a sweep of a North Coast Athletic Conference
doubleheader against Oberlin on Saturday at Mingo Park.
The Bishops took an early lead in the opener erupting for 4 runs in the
bottom of the first inning. Senior shortstop Linsey Longstreth (Akron/Archbishop
Hoban) led off with a single and scored when Oberlin third baseman Spencer
McCaffrey threw wildly on a sacrifice by senior outfielder Britt Born
(Caledonia/Marion Harding). Senior third baseman Amy Mazur (Elyria) singled
Born to third, and Downs singled to score Born for a 2-0 lead. Sophomore
outfielder Kiley King (Delaware/Olentangy) singled home Mazur and after
a sacrifice by junior outfielder Carli Wittman (Oak Harbor), Downs scored
on a wild pitch.
Mazur delivered an RBI single and Downs blasted a run-scoring double as
the Bishops increased their lead to 6-0 in the second, then sophomore
catcher Miranda Simmons (Norwalk) and Born drove in runs to highlight
a 3-run third that gave Ohio Wesleyan a 9-0 lead. Junior second baseman
Theresa Longenecker (Lynbrook, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) finished off
the Ohio Wesleyan scoring with an RBI double in the fourth.
Downs went 3-for-3 with 2 RBI, while Longstreth and Mazur each collected
2 hits.

out 4 while walking one.

In the nightcap, the Bishops again scored in the first inning, posting
2 runs as Longstreth scored on a wild pitch and Downs ripped an RBI single
later in the frame.
Oberlin closed to within 2-1 in the third as Alie Plotsky drew a one-out
walk, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on McCaffrey's single
to center.
Ohio Wesleyan got that run back in the bottom of the inning when Downs
launched a 2-out triple and scored when McCaffrey misplayed Longenecker's
grounder.
The Bishops tacked on 5 runs in the fourth, highlighted RBI singles from
Born, Mazur and Longenecker and a sacrifice fly by Downs.
