[ Sarah Downs ]Senior first baseman Sarah Downs (Canton, Conn./Avon) went 5-for-6 and drove in 4 runs to lead Ohio Wesleyan to a sweep of a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader against Oberlin on Saturday at Mingo Park.

The Bishops took an early lead in the opener erupting for 4 runs in the bottom of the first inning. Senior shortstop Linsey Longstreth (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) led off with a single and scored when Oberlin third baseman Spencer McCaffrey threw wildly on a sacrifice by senior outfielder Britt Born (Caledonia/Marion Harding). Senior third baseman Amy Mazur (Elyria) singled Born to third, and Downs singled to score Born for a 2-0 lead. Sophomore outfielder Kiley King (Delaware/Olentangy) singled home Mazur and after a sacrifice by junior outfielder Carli Wittman (Oak Harbor), Downs scored on a wild pitch.

Mazur delivered an RBI single and Downs blasted a run-scoring double as the Bishops increased their lead to 6-0 in the second, then sophomore catcher Miranda Simmons (Norwalk) and Born drove in runs to highlight a 3-run third that gave Ohio Wesleyan a 9-0 lead. Junior second baseman Theresa Longenecker (Lynbrook, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) finished off the Ohio Wesleyan scoring with an RBI double in the fourth.

Downs went 3-for-3 with 2 RBI, while Longstreth and Mazur each collected 2 hits.

Junior righthander Claire Martin (Jefferson) fired a 3-hit shutout, striking out 4 while walking one.

Michelle Zanni pitched the complete game for Oberlin.

In the nightcap, the Bishops again scored in the first inning, posting 2 runs as Longstreth scored on a wild pitch and Downs ripped an RBI single later in the frame.

Oberlin closed to within 2-1 in the third as Alie Plotsky drew a one-out walk, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on McCaffrey's single to center.

Ohio Wesleyan got that run back in the bottom of the inning when Downs launched a 2-out triple and scored when McCaffrey misplayed Longenecker's grounder.

The Bishops tacked on 5 runs in the fourth, highlighted RBI singles from Born, Mazur and Longenecker and a sacrifice fly by Downs.

Downs was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI, while Born was 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored and Wittman went 2-for-3 with one run scored.

Junior righthander Kelly Zampino (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) limited the Yeowomen to 2 hits, striking out 9 and walking 5.

Kate Oberg pitched the complete game for Oberlin.
