Ohio Wesleyan 65, Oberlin 58

Sophomore guard Kathleen Cooper (Columbus/Upper Arlington) hit a pair of 3-pointers to open the Ohio Wesleyan scoring and junior guard Rachel Messaros (Reynoldsburg/Bishop Hartley) had 6 points to kick off a key 20-6 first-half run that helped the Bishops defeat Oberlin in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Friday in Oberlin.

Cooper's pair of 3-pointers, sandwiched around a Mandi Van Allen basket, gave Ohio Wesleyan an early 6-2 lead. Oberlin answered with 8 straight points, getting 3 buckets from Jessie Oram and another from Maggie Casey, to take a 10-6 lead nearly 6 minutes into the game.

Messaros responded with a 3-pointer to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 10-9, and after freshman post Laurel Lawson (Navarre/Fairless) scored for an 11-10 Bishop lead, Messaros converted a 3-point play for a 14-10 Bishop lead, with all 8 points scored in a span of less than 40 seconds. Senior guard Amanda Nanney (Cincinnati/Mother of Mercy), Cooper and senior guard Jamie Rea (Delaware/Hayes) added 3-pointers to highlight the rest of the run, which gave the Bishops a 26-16 lead with 7:01 left in the first half.

The Bishops led by as many as 12 points, that at 37-25 on a 3-pointer by sophomore wing Steffi Graf (Poland/Seminary) early in the second half, and still led, 40-29, on another Graf 3-pointer before Oberlin rallied. The Yeowomen got a pair of lay-ins from Oram, a pair of 3-pointers by Meg Rietz and a pair of buckets by Alyssa Clark to close to within 44-43 at the midway point of the second half.

Sophomore post Kelli Lester (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) scored to end the Bishop drought, but Oberlin again crept to within a single marker on Kira Rivera's bucket with 7:53 remaining.

Ohio Wesleyan then turned to its long-range artillery to put the game out of reach. In a span of 2:30, the Bishops got 3-pointers from Cooper and junior guard Emily Lloyd (Canton/Massillon Jackson) and 2 more by Nanney to take a 58-49 lead with 5:28 remaining.

Oberlin put together one last run, inching to within 62-58 with :29 to play, but Cooper iced the game at the free throw line.

Cooper led the Bishops with 17 points, while Lester grabbed a team-best 10 rebounds. Lloyd and sophomore guard Lindsey Macklin (Columbus/Bexley) shared the team lead with 3 assists apiece.

Oram led the Yeowomen with 25 points and 11 rebounds, while Clark finished with 17 points and led Oberlin with 5 assists.
