Denison 64, Ohio Wesleyan 61

Sophomore post Kelli Lester (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) and junior guard Emily Lloyd (Canton/Massillon Jackson) scored to give Ohio Wesleyan a 61-60 lead with just over a minute to play, but Denison rallied with a pair of buckets to eke out a North Coast Athletic Conference win over the Bishops on Saturday in Granville.

Denison's Sarah Perrine had given the Big Red a 60-57 lead with a pair of free throws with 1:34 remaining.

Lester then scored with 1:21 left to bring the Bishops within 60-59, and after sophomore wing Steffi Graf (Poland/Seminary) stole the ball, Lloyd hit a lay-in to put Ohio Wesleyan ahead, 61-60, with 1:02 left in regulation time.

Caitlin Krupka's lay-in gave Denison a 62-61 lead with :48 to play, and after a Bishop turnover, Carolyn Simpson hit a jumper with :14 left for a 64-61 Denison lead.

Ohio Wesleyan had a chance to send the game into overtime, but Graf's 3-point shot in the closing seconds was off the mark.

The Bishops raced to a 4-0 lead on a pair of free throws by Graf and a bucket by Lester, and after Denison came back to tie the game at 10-10, the Bishops reeled off 7 straight points on 4 consecutive Lester free throws and a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Lindsey Macklin (Columbus/Bexley).

Ohio Wesleyan would lead by as many as 9 points, that at 25-16 on Lloyd's 3-pointer with 5:11 left in the first half, but Denison rallied to within 2 points at the intermission and evened the game once more on Perrine's lay-in to open the second half.

Graf responded with a 3-pointer, and after Lester converted a 3-point play, sophomore post Malley Adamsky (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) contributed 2 lay-ins, Graf added a jumper and senior guard Amanda Nanney (Cincinnati/Mother of Mercy) hit a 3-pointer, the Bishops had built a 46-36 lead with 12:44 left in regulation time.

Denison chipped away at the deficit, getting 4 free throws apiece from Ellen O'Brien and Katie St. Clair, and the Big Red closed to within a single point at 53-52 on Marisa Hard's 3-pointer with 5:27 to play.

Lester hit a pair of free throws to make it a 55-52 game with 4:22 left, but Denison's Carolyn Simpson scored the next 6 points, giving the Big Red a 58-55 lead with 2:21 to go and setting up the nailbiting final minutes.

Lester led the Bishops with 15 points and shared the team lead with 2 assists, while Graf finished with 11 points. Sophomore guard Molly Baker (Avon Lake) grabbed a team-high 8 rebounds and sophomore guard Kathleen Cooper (Columbus/Upper Arlington) also shared the team lead with 2 assists.

Perrine and Simpson shared the Big Red lead with 13 points apiece, while Hard scored 11 points. Tammy Hoch led Denison with 6 rebounds and O'Brien dished out 6 assists.
