Ohio Wesleyan 88, Kenyon 75

Jan. 11, 2006

[ Steffi Graf ]Sophomore guard Steffi Graf (Poland/Seminary) and junior guard Emily Lloyd (Canton/Massillon Jackson) fueled a record-setting display of 3-point shooting that led Ohio Wesleyan over Kenyon in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Wednesday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Ohio Wesleyan jumped to an early 8-2 lead on 3-pointers by Graf and sophomore guard Kathleen Cooper (Columbus/Upper Arlington) as well as a pair of free throws by Lloyd.

Kenyon came back to take a 21-20 lead on Megan Sheasby's 3-point play with 10:02 left in the first half, but Ohio Wesleyan responded with a 19-2 run that broke the game open.

Sophomore post Kelli Lester (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) started the spurt with a free throw, then Cooper put the Bishops ahead to stay with a 3-pointer.

Eva George scored to bring Kenyon within a point, but Graf answered with a lay-in before senior guard Amanda Nanney (Cincinnati/Mother of Mercy) hit a 3-pointer and Lloyd buried 2 more long-range bombs. Junior guard Rachel Messaros (Reynoldsburg/Bishop Hartley) and Graf followed with a pair of free throws apiece for a 39-23 Bishop lead with 3:28 left in the half.

The Bishops extended the lead to 45-26 on a Messaros free throw, but Kenyon rallied, thanks in part to a pair of Eva George buckets, to close within 45-33 at halftime. During the first half, Kenyon shot 60.9 percent from the field (14-for-23) but that was trumped by the fact that of Ohio Wesleyan's 13 baskets during the period, 11 came from beyond the arc.

Hilary Gowins hit a 3-pointer in the first minute of the second period as the Ladies pared the deficit into single digits, but Ohio Wesleyan reeled off 10 straight points, including 3-pointers by Graf, Nanney and Graf again, for a 55-36 advantage with 17:16 to go. Kenyon would not come closer than 12 points during the remainder of the contest.

Graf led the Bishops with 21 points, including a 5-for-6 effort from beyond the arc. Graf's 5 trifectas tied the school record previously accomplished 11 times. Lloyd finished with 16 points, with 12 of them coming from downtown, and dished out 5 assists. Nanney added 11 points, Cooper scored 10 points and led the Bishops with 6 assists, and Lester added 10 points and led the Bishops with 5 rebounds.

As a team, the Bishops went 17-for-31 from 3-point range, setting both school and North Coast Athletic Conference single-game records for 3-pointers made. Ohio Wesleyan set both records earlier this season, making 15 3-pointers against Chatham on Nov. 27.

George led the Ladies with 20 points, while Katy Zeanah scored 18 points and grabbed a game-high 8 rebounds. Alisha Moreno added 15 points and led Kenyon with 7 assists and Sheasby finished with 13 points
