Ohio Wesleyan 79, Earlham 59

[ Amanda Nanney ]Senior guard Amanda Nanney (Cincinnati/Mother of Mercy) helped fuel a pair of first-half runs and set a school record in leading Ohio Wesleyan to a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Earlham on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.

The Bishops raced to an early 7-0 lead, getting a pair of baskets from sophomore post Kelli Lester (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) before Nanney provided the exclamation point with a 3-pointer just over 2 minutes into the game.

Earlham closed to within 11-9 on Samantha Lurie's 3-point play with 13:06 left in the first half, but Ohio Wesleyan answered with a 13-4 run that once again hiked the lead into double figures.

Once again, Lester started the Bishop run with a basket before Nanney followed with a 3-pointer.
Sophomore guard Kathleen Cooper (Columbus/Upper Arlington) also hit a 3-pointer, as did sophomore guard Steffi Graf (Poland/Seminary), whose long-range bomb gave Ohio Wesleyan a 24-13 lead at the midpoint of the first period.

The Quakers had one more rally left, coming within 39-31 on Chelsea Caywood's jumper in the last minute of the half, but sophomore guard Lindsey Macklin (Columbus/Bexley) scored to make it a 10-point game at the break.

Caywood's pullup jumper brought Earlham within 52-41 with 12:24 left in regulation time, but the Bishops reeled off the next 9 points on 3-pointers by sophomore guard Molly Baker (Avon Lake), Graf and Nanney to put the game out of reach.

Nanney hit seven 3-pointers, breaking the school record of 5 accomplished on 11 occasions. She finished with a career-high 23 points. Lester added 13 points and led the Bishops with 8 rebounds, while Baker finished with 10 points. Cooper dished out a game-high 8 assists.

LeShea Orr led Earlham with 12 points, while Whitney McBurrows had 11 poitns and Caywood finished with 10 points. Tasha Merrill led the Quakers with 8 rebounds and McBurrows, Merrill and Janee' Covington shared the Earlham lead with 3 assists apiece.
