Wittenberg 57, Ohio Wesleyan 54

Jan. 21, 2006

Junior guard Emily Lloyd (Canton/Massillon Jackson) scored to give Ohio Wesleyan a 54-51 lead, but Wittenberg scored the last 6 points of the game to take a North Coast Athletic Conference win over the Bishops on Saturday in Springfield.

After Lloyd's steal and fast-break layin with 4:04 to play, the Tigers got a jumper from Kathy Hittle on their next possession to close within 54-53, which would turn out to be the last field goal attempt taken by Wittenberg.

The Tigers turned the ball over on their next 2 possessions, but Ohio Wesleyan was unable to add to its lead, missing a pair of 3-pointers and turning the ball over once.

Wittenberg took a 55-54 lead on a pair of Hittle free throws with 1:36 remaining. After the Bishops missed a 3-pointer, Wittenberg's Rachel Clark-Haggy cleared the rebound and was fouled, and she hit both free throws for a 57-54 lead with 1:17 to play.

Lloyd was called for an offensive foul with 1:00 to play, but the Bishops got the ball back on a turnover with :29 to go. Lloyd's game-tying 3-point attempt was off the mark with :17 left, but sophomore guard Molly Baker (Avon Lake) chased down the offensive rebound to give Ohio Wesleyan another chance. Sophomore guard Kathleen Cooper (Columbus/Upper Arlington) ended up with a chance to send the game into overtime, but her shot was off the mark as well.

Each team would lead by 4 points during the first half, but the Bishops scored the last 6 points of the period to take a 32-28 lead into the locker room. With Ohio Wesleyan trailing, 28-26, freshman post Katie Hamilton (Marysville/Hilliard Darby) hit 3 of 4 free throws and Cooper drilled a 3-pointer with :19 left in the half.

Wittenberg opened the second half with a basket by Ali Rohlfs to come within 32-30, but sophomore post Kelli Lester (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) canned a jumper and senior guard Amanda Nanney (Cincinnati/Mother of Mercy) hit a 3-pointer to stretch the Bishop lead to 7 points. Ohio Wesleyan would lead by 8 points on a handful of occasions, the last on Nanney's 3-pointer that made it 52-44 with 8:39 remaining.

The Tigers closed to within 52-51 on a Rohlfs 3-pointer and baskets by Hittle and Katie Gregorevich, setting up the final minutes.

Sophomore wing Steffi Graf (
Poland/Seminary) led the Bishops with 14 points. Nanney and sophomore guard Lindsey Macklin (Columbus/Bexley) shared the team lead with 4 rebounds apiece and Lloyd led the Bishops with 3 assists.

Hittle scored a team-high 18 points for Wittenberg, while Rohlfs had 13 points and a team-leading 11 rebounds. Megan Miller led Wittenberg with 3 assist
