Ohio Wesleyan 80, Oberlin 52

Junior guard Emily Lloyd (Canton/Massillon Jackson) scored 6 points and sophomore guard Kathleen Cooper (Columbus/Upper Arlington) added 5 more as Ohio Wesleyan racked up 18 points in less than 4 minutes to open the game and went on to take a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Oberlin on Wednesday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Sophomore post Kelli Lester (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) put the Bishops on the scoreboard on their first possession of the game, and Cooper converted a 3-point play to hike the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 5-0. Lloyd and Lester followed with lay-ins that gave the Bishops a 9-0 lead before a lay-in and a pair of free throws by Lloyd made it 13-0. Cooper's lay-in stretched the margin to 15-0 with 16:38 left in the first half.

Oberlin got on the scoreboard on a lay-in by Alyssa Clark, but junior guard Rachel Messaros (Reynoldsburg/Bishop Hartley) buried a 3-pointer to give Ohio Wesleyan an 18-2 lead with 16:10 on the clock.

The Bishops took a 36-15 lead on a bucket by sophomore guard Molly Baker (Avon Lake), but Oberlin rallied in the closing minutes of the half.

As the clock ticked below 4 minutes to go in the half, Clark buried a 3-pointer from about 35 feet just as the shot clock buzzer sounded, and that put a spark into the Yeowomen. Clark followed with a free throw, then Valerie Cain hit a pair of charity tosses, and Clark added a fast break lay-in to slice the deficit to 36-23 with 1:22 left in the half.

Ohio Wesleyan finished the half with a basket by senior guard Julie Schlenkerman (Lakewood), then opened the second stanza with 7 straight points, including a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Steffi Graf (Poland/Seminary) that gave the Bishops a 45-23 lead, and the Yeowomen did not threaten again.

Cooper and Baker shared the Bishop lead with 10 points apiece, and Baker led the Bishops with 6 rebounds.

Clark led the Yeowomen with 19 points and 4 assists. Meg Reitz finished with 11 poitns and Cain grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.
