Allegheny 65, Ohio Wesleyan 63

Jan. 28, 2006

Sophomore guard Kathleen Cooper (Columbus/Upper Arlington) buried a 3-pointer to bring the Bishops within 65-63, but Allegheny held on for a North Coast Athletic Conference win on Saturday in Meadville, Pa.

Ohio Wesleyan had closed to within 61-60 on a 3-point play by sophomore guard Steffi Graf (Poland/Seminary) with 1:20 remaining.

Allegheny got a jumper from Caitlin Murtagh with 1:06 left, giving the Bishops the ball with a chance to tie the game. Sophomore guard Molly Baker (Avon Lake) misfired on a 3-point attempt, with Graf chasing down the offensive rebound. Graf tried another potential game-tying 3-pointer, but her shot was off the mark as well.

The Gators controlled the ball after that, and Murtagh was fouled with :29 to play. She hit both free throws for a 65-60 Allegheny lead.

Baker missed another 3-point attempt, with Cooper getting the rebound and sinking a 3-pointer with :03 left on the clock, but Ohio Wesleyan was not able to get the ball back.

Ohio Wesleyan had led by as many as 8 points during the first half, that on a 3-pointer by junior guard Emily Lloyd (Canton/Massillon Jackson) that made it 23-15 with 8:05 remaining.

Allegheny rallied to come within 29-28 on Becca Gasiewicz' 3-pointer with 1:10 left in the half, but the Bishops seized the momentum going into the intermission, getting a lay-in by freshman post Katie Hamilton (Marysville/Hilliard Darby) and a 3-pointer by Baker in the last minute of play to take a 34-28 lead.

The Gators closed to within 38-36 early in the second half on Katie Kestler's 3-pointer with 17:12 left, but the Bishops bounced back to take a 50-40 lead on Graf's 2 free throws with 12:29 to play.

Ohio Wesleyan still led by 10 points when Hamilton's jumper gave the Bishops a 54-44 lead with 10:14 to go, but the Gators reeled off 14 straight points to take the lead for good. Meghan Vasilisin scored twice and Kestler and Courtney Steding added lay-ins before Steding tied the game at 54 with a lay-in with 5:20 to go. Murtagh's jumper with 4:36 left put the Gators ahead to stay and Vasilisin's lay-in made it 58-54 with 3:48 to go.

Sophomore post Kelli Lester (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) ended the Bishop drought with a pair of free throws with 2:47 to play, and junior guard Rachel Messaros (Reynoldsburg/Bishop Hartley) hit the second of 2 free throws to pull Ohio Wesleyan within a point at 58-57 with 2:15 remaining, but Murtagh answered with a 3-point play with 1:54 left to set up the final few minutes.

Lloyd led the Bishops with 14 points, while Baker finished with 12 points and Messaros added 10 points. Lester, Baker and freshman post Laurel Lawson (Navarre/Fairless) shared the team lead with 5 rebounds apiece and Baker had a team-high 5 assists.

Murtagh led the Gators with 17 points, Vasilisin scored 16 points and Steding had 10 points and team bests of 10 rebounds and 3 assists
