Ohio Wesleyan 90, Earlham 78

Junior guard Emily Lloyd (Canton/Massillon Jackson) and sophomore guard Molly Baker (Avon Lake) buried 3-pointers to highlight an 8-0 run that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay, and the Bishops pulled away down the stretch en route to a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Earlham
on Tuesday in Richmond, Ind.

With the score tied at 61-61 with less than 12 minutes left in regulation time, Lloyd drilled a 3-pointer to give the Bishops the lead with 10:59 to play. Sophomore post Kelli Lester (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) followed with a lay-in and Baker nailed a 3-pointer that gave Ohio Wesleyan a 69-61 lead with 9:54 to go.

Earlham closed to within 6 points on a pair of occasions after that, the second time at 75-69 on Janee' Covington's lay-in with 7:08 remaining, but the Bishops answered with another 8-0 run. Baker started off the spurt with a bucket and a free throw, then
sophomore wing Steffi Graf (Poland/Seminary) added a jumper and senior guard Amanda Nanney (Cincinnati/Mother of Mercy) hit a 3-pointer that made it 83-69 with 5:20 to go, and the Bishop lead would remain in double digits for the remainder of the contest.

The Quakers opened the game with a 9-3 run, getting a bucket and a 3-point play by Tasha Merrill and a pair of free throws by Covington, before the Bishops came back with an 8-2 run highlighted by a couple of Baker 3-pointers to tie the game at 11-11.

Chelsea Caywood scored to give the Quakers a 13-11 lead, but Ohio Wesleyan reeled off the next 10 points, in part on 3-pointers by senior guard Jamie Rea (Delaware/Hayes) and Nanney, to take a 21-13 advantage. The Bishops stretched their lead to 32-19 on a pair of free throws by junior wing Rachel Messaros (Reynoldsburg/Bishop Hartley), but Earlham responded with a 12-2 run that included a pair of Covington 3-pointers to come within 34-31 in a span of exactly 3 minutes. Earlham eventually tied the game at 43-43 on Covington's 3-pointer with 1:11 left in the first half.

Baker came back with a pair of free throws to give Ohio Wesleyan a 45-43 lead at halftime, and the opening of the second half was evenly-matched, with the score tied 5 times in the early going before Lloyd's 3-pointer put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay.

Baker led the Bishops with 21 points, while Lloyd finished with 18 and Messaros scored 15. Nanney grabbed a team-high 9 rebounds and Lloyd, Nanney and Baker shared the team lead with 3 assists apiece.

Covington led Earlham with 24 points and 6 assists. Merrill finished with 19 points, Caywood added 16 points and Whitney McBurrows scored 14 and led Earlham with 7 rebounds
