Ohio Wesleyan 60, Wooster 45

Feb. 3, 2006

[ Rachel Messaros ]Junior guard Rachel Messaros (Reynoldsburg/Bishop Hartley) drilled back-to-back 3-pointers to highlight a first-half 16-2 run that helped Ohio Wesleyan on its way to a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Wooster on Friday at Branch Rickey Arena.

The Bishops never trailed in the game, taking an early 3-0 lead on a 3-pointer by senior guard Amanda Nanney (Cincinnati/Mother of Mercy).

Wooster rallied to tied the game at 6-6 on lay-ins by Angela Evans and Carly Loehrke, but a lay-in by sophomore guard Lindsey Macklin (Columbus/Bexley) put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay.

Ohio Wesleyan led, 16-12, with 9:20 left in the first half when the Bishops went on their run.
Freshman post Katie Hamilton (Marysville/Hilliard Darby) started things off with a lay-in, and junior guard Emily Lloyd (Canton/Massillon Jackson) followed with a fast-break bucket that made it 20-12 in favor of the Bishops.

Wooster came back with a bucket by Jackie Lewis, but the Bishops struck in rapid-fire fashion, collecting a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Molly Baker (Avon Lake) and 2 more from Messaros in a span of 66 seconds, stretching the margin to 29-14. Hamilton finished off the spurt with a 3-point play for a 32-14 Ohio Wesleyan lead with 3:35 left in the half.

Ohio Wesleyan led, 36-17, going into the locker room, and made it a 21-point margin on Messaros' bucket to open the second stanza.

Wooster then got back into the game by reeling off 13 straight points. Maria Gonzalez contributed a pair of fast-break lay-ins, Meredith Wilson hit a 3-pointer and Loehrke added a lay-in to slice the deficit to 38-30 just over 6 minutes into the half.

After the teams traded a pair of free throws, giving the Bishops a 40-32 edge, Ohio Wesleyan scored the next 7 points on lay-ins by Hamilton and Messaros and another Hamilton 3-point play, and the lead remained in double digits for the remainder of the contest.

Messaros led the Bishops with 14 points, while Hamilton finished with season highs of 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Loehrke scored a team-high 10 points for Wooster. Vicki Meyer led the Fighting Scots with 6 rebounds and Jessica Hope had a team-high 3 assists.
