Wittenberg 77, Ohio Wesleyan 58

Freshman post Laurel Lawson (Navarre/Fairless) sank a pair of free throws with :04 left in the first half to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 26-24, but Wittenberg opened the second half with a 10-0 run and went on to defeat the Bishops in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.

The Tigers had taken a 26-19 lead on a pair of free throws by Rachel Clark-Haggy with 1:03 left in the half before Ohio Wesleyan stormed back. Junior guard Emily Lloyd (Canton/Massillon Jackson) sank a pair of free throws with :51 left, and after a Wittenberg miss, sophomore guard Molly Baker (Avon Lake) drilled a 3-pointer to make it 26-22 with :34 left.

On the other end of the court, Baker blocked a shot by Wittenberg's Kristin Donawerth, and after Clark-Haggy misfired on a putback, Lawson grabbed the rebound and was fouled with :04 to play, and she sank both free throws for a 26-24 score at the intermission.

Wittenberg opened the second half with a pair of free throws by Ali Rohlfs, then Clark-Haggy hit back-to-back lay-ins and Kathy Hittle followed with a basket before a pair of Clark-Haggy free throws hiked the Tiger lead to 36-24 with 17:39 left in the game.

Junior guard Rachel Messaros (Reynoldsburg/Bishop Hartley) answered with a 3-pointer to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 36-27, and the Bishops later trailed by a count of 40-31 after another Messaros 3-pointer, but Wittenberg scored the next 6 points, getting a basket and a free throw from Hittle and a 3-pointer by Ellie Stonecash to make it 46-31 and the lead remained in double digits for the remainder of the game.

Wittenberg took the lead with an early 10-2 run that included a 3-point play by Hittle and a 3-pointer by Andrea Hackett, and the Tigers eventually stretched the lead to 9 points before Ohio Wesleyan's last-minute rally.

Baker led the Bishops with 18 points and 3 assists. Messaros finished with 15 points and Lloyd added 10 points. Lawson led the Bishops with 6 rebounds.

Hittle finished with 17 points and 17 rebounds to lead the Tigers, while Clark-Haggy added 16 points and Katie Gregorevich had 11 points and shared the team lead with 4 assists. Megan Miller also shared the Wittenberg lead with 4 assists.
