Ohio Wesleyan 83, Denison 75

Senior guard Amanda Nanney (Cincinnati/Mother of Mercy) hit a pair of 3-pointers and sophomore guard Steffi Graf (Poland/Seminary) and junior guard Emily Lloyd (Canton/Massillon Jackson) added 3-pointers as Ohio Wesleyan ended the first half with a 16-1 run and went on to defeat Denison in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Denison had taken a 34-30 lead on a pair of free throws by Tammy Hoch with 3:52 left in the first half.

Lloyd drilled a 3-pointer on the Bishops' next possession, then sank a jumper after a Denison turnover to give Ohio Wesleyan the lead for good. Freshman post Katie Hamilton (Marysville/Hilliard Darby) added a pair of free throws for a 37-34 Bishop lead with 2:34 left in the period.

Graf followed with a 3-pointer, and Nanney drilled another bomb to stretch the margin to 43-34 with 1:21 to play.

The Big Red ended their drought when Lauren Vashaw hit the second of 2 free throws with :38 remaining, but Nanney ended the first half with an exclamation point, sinking a 3-pointer with :12 left that gave Ohio Wesleyan a 46-35 lead heading into the locker room.

Graf drilled a 3-pointer to open the second half, extending the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 49-35.

The Big Red then scored 7 straight points, getting a 3-point play from Caitlin Krupka and baskets by Krupka and Kristen Sheffield to close within 49-42, but Nanney sank another 3-pointer and Lloyd drilled 2 more long-range shots to once again stretch the Bishop lead to 14 points at 58-44 with 16:38 remaining.

Denison rallied to within 4 points, as Tammy Hoch hit a pair of baskets and Krupka sank a 3-pointer to highlight a run that brought the Big Red within 62-58 with 9:55 remaining. The Big Red closed to within 3 points at 67-64 on Sarah Perrine's lay-in with 6:36 to play.

Sophomore post Kelli Lester (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) hit a pair of free throws and Nanney added a jumper to end that Denison rally.

The Big Red came back one more time, closing to within 76-71 on Perrine's 3-pointer with 1:33 to play, but once more, the Bishops had an answer, this time with Lloyd burying a 3-pointer with 1:24 to go and Graf sinking a pair of free throws to make it an 81-71 game with :51 on the clock.

Graf turned in a remarkable shooting performance, going 7-for-8 from the field, including 6-for-7 from 3-point range, and 6-for-7 from the line on the way to a career-high 26 points. Graf also led Ohio Wesleyan with 9 rebounds. Lloyd finished with 18 points and Nanney added 17 points. Sophomore guard Kathleen Cooper (Columbus/Upper Arlington) led the Bishops with 8 assists.

Krupka led Denison with 14 points, Sheffield added 11 points and Hoch finished with 10 points. Hoch led the Big Red with 9 rebounds and Ellen O'Brien had a team-high 5 assists.
