Whitman 73, Ohio Wesleyan 51

Junior guard Rachel Messaros (Reynoldsburg/Bishop Hartley) scored 4 straight points to give the Bishops an early lead, but Whitman used an 8-0 run to take the lead for good and an 11-0 run to break things open on the way to a win in the first round of the Midway Classic on Saturday at the University of Chicago.

Messaros scored the first 4 points of the game to give Ohio Wesleyan an early lead, and the Bishops later took a 12-10 advantage on a 3-pointer by senior guard Amanda Nanney (Cincinnati/Mother of Mercy) with 13:19 left in the first half.

Whitman tied the game on a lay-in by Kate Ptneaude, then took the lead for good on a pair of free throws by Lizzy Washburn with 11:56 left in the half. Sarah Laird added a jumper and Ptneaude hit another lay-in for an 18-12 Whitman lead.

The Bishops were within 20-16 on a bucket by sophomore post Kelli Lester (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) with 9:15 left in the half, but Whitman countered with a 9-0 spree that included a 3-point play and another bucket by Ptneaude, the latter making it a 29-16 game with 5:44 left in the half.

Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 29-23 late in the half as sophomore guard Kathleen Cooper (Columbus/Upper Arlington) hit a basket and a 3-pointer, and the Bishops went into the locker room trailing, 33-25, after a basket by freshman post Laurel Lawson (Navarre/Fairless) in the closing seconds.

Messaros' hit a pair of 3-pointers during the opening minutes of the second half, with the second one bringing Ohio Wesleyan within 44-39 with 12:29 remaining, but the Bishops went scoreless for the next 4 minutes while Whitman racked up 11 points to stretch the lead to 55-39 with 8 minutes to go. Washburn sank 3 straight layups to open the run and Laird added a 3-point play.

Messaros led the Bishops with 14 points. Freshman post Katie Hamilton (Marysville/Hilliard Darby) grabbed a team-leading 6 boards and Cooper dished out a team-high 5 assists.

Ptneaude led Whitman with 27 points and shared the team lead with 8 rebounds. Washburn finished with 14 points, as did Laura Vertatschitsch, and Laird also shared the team lead with 8 rebounds. Laird and Kristina Francis had 4 assists apiece for Whitman.
