Case Reserve 64, Ohio Wesleyan 48

Dana Dempsey scored 5 points as Case Reserve opened the game with a 9-0 run and went on to take a non-conference win over Ohio Wesleyan on Tuesday in Cleveland.

Dempsey hit a 3-pointer on the first possession of the game and added a jumper 2 minutes into the action to give the Spartans a 5-0 lead. Ashley Norton added a pair of free throws and Carmen Rowan scored on a fast break for a 9-0 CWRU lead with 17:12 left in the first half.

Ohio Wesleyan overcame its slow start, rallying behind 4 points by junior guard Rachel Messaros (Reynoldsburg/Bishop Hartley) and 3-pointers by sophomore guard Molly Baker (Avon Lake) and sophomore guard Steffi Graf (Poland/Seminary) to close to within 17-15 with 6:45 left in the first half.

However, Baker's 3-pointer that made it a 17-15 game would turn out to be Ohio Wesleyan's last basket of the half. The Spartans scored the next 14 points, highlighted by back-to-back Dempsey 3-pointers, en route to closing out the period with a 16-1 run for a 33-16 halftime lead.

Baker buried a pair of 3-pointers early in the second half, and Messaros and senior guard Amanda Nanney (Cincinnati/Mother of Mercy) also hit 3-pointers to bring the Bishops within 42-30, but that was as close as Ohio Wesleyan would come.

Messaros led the Bishops with 17 points and 5 rebounds, while Baker finished with 12 points. Sophomore guard Kathleen Cooper (Columbus/Upper Arlington) also shared the team lead with 5 boards and dished out a team-high 3 assists.

Dempsey scored a game-high 18 points to lead Case Reserve. Horton finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
